Seated Liberty Coin Series Books

erwindocerwindoc Posts: 5,112 ✭✭✭✭✭

Im just exploring the series now, mostly with half-dimes, dimes and possibly quarters and I was wondering if this book was worth picking up? I have several others in the series that have lots of nuggets of information. Other suggestions as it is coming up on Christmas!

If you are looking for a single book overview of Seated coinage, this is the one. I wrote the Foreword, so I am biased :)

If you are into die varieties, there are more specialized books available.

Excellent Foreword, by the way. I enjoyed reading it as well as QDB's introduction. However, you're not Kenneth Bressett as shown on the cover. Is there another edition coming out now?

Odd. My copy says Foreword by Leonard D. Augsburger rather than Kenneth Bressett. My copy was published in 2016. Can't find anything about this being a reissue or anything like that. Enjoyed the foreword though @Coinosaurus. James

For half dimes, the published references (Valentine, Blythe) have lots of good information, but some not so good. And there are many die marriages that are not described or pictured well enough to be useful, if they are listed at all. It's coming up on 100 years since Valentine, and over 30 since Blythe. With the more recent increase in access to coins and online photos, many additional marriages and die states are now known. I've discovered some myself. And I'm sure many others are yet to be identified (making the pursuit more fun). @yosclimber is working on better guides...

Oops! Didn't realize there was a second edition. I wrote the Foreword for the first edition.

The guide book is a must add if you are interested in seated coinage.

As mentioned above, when you are ready to get granular with your collection, there is plenty of great reference material available online for specific denominations, but the Bowers guide book is well written, with good images of the coinage for all denominations.
