Will Ovechkin pass Gretzky this season?

craig44craig44 Posts: 11,348 ✭✭✭✭✭

after last season, when he only scored 31 times, Ovechkin finished at 853 goals, 42 away from passing The Great One. it sure seemed like he was going to need 2 more seasons to pass him. However, Alex has been on a tear this season so far and has netted 13 goals in 17 games to pull within 29 goals from passing Wayne.

Do you think he can do it this season?

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

Will be close. Believe the opponents will loosen the nets as the season progresses. So yes.

2 more goals for Ovechkin last night. 27 to go. The guy is on fire right now.

Injury too, though - knee on knee, but from the side so it wasn’t clear how serious it was. As a Penguin guy, I’m no fan of Ovi but I hope he breaks the record.

I dont know the severity either. I remember when Gretzky set the record. I never thought I would ever see it broken. His points record probably will never be broken.

No chance - he still has more assists than anyone else has points. I don’t see the league going back to the wide-open style of the 80s anytime soon, so I think his assists and points records are etched in stone.

ETA - Jagr’s point total would have surpassed Wayne’s assist total if Jagr hadn’t bolted for a couple years to play in the KHL and Czech leagues when he was still very productive.

    sorry not burns Lemaire

I always blamed Lou Lamoriello and the New Jersey trap, but you’re right - Lemaire was the coach so he’s just as much at fault in ruining the good times.

Hope he does not pass Gretzky but he will. No one will ever pass his point total that would require 200 points per season for almost 15 straight years. No one has ever had 200 points in a season except Gretzky a few times and Lemieux had one season at 199 points.

some sort of "lower body injury" they have not released what. said he is "week to week" I wonder why so secretive? Its not like they dont know what is wrong. I read that in "insider" said it would be a long recovery from this mystery injury.

I wonder if he fractured his tibula?

Hockey injuries are almost always reported like this for some reason (concussions being an exception). Always very vague - just upper or lower body, day to day / week to week. Very annoying.
