Russia Rouble, Peter I Variety Attribution Question

I am looking for information on a coin I recently had graded by PCGS, a 1720 OK Rouble. The variety attribution came back confusing. Can those that have knowledge explain why the OK shows -OK-? This is its own PCGS number as well. PCGS customer service suggested it had to do with the position of the K in the 1720 date, but didn't solidly confirm. Also, I don't have access to a Bitkin Catalogue. Can someone tell me more about Bit-410 with edge date 1719? I have only been able to locate one of these coins through web searches of auctions, etc. It shows up in Numista #102409 but doesn't note there is an edge date. All input is appreciated.

  • OK is for the OK on the bottom of Peter’s shoulder

  • Yes. That I always knew. My question is why PCGS designated this coin with a (dot)OK(dot). It appears there is significance as PCGS made a population report specific to this. There is an "OK" and a ".OK." Any ideas? Any Bitkin information on 410 with 1719 edge would be appreciated as well!

  • Nowhere else have I seen any reference to (dot)OK(dot) relating to OK roubles. I am confused and need to understand my coins as thoroughly as possible. All thoughts are welcome.

For 1720 Ruble from Kadashevskiy Mint there are easily over a hundred varieties. There are 8 variations in the edge inscription alone. Plus portrait and eagle variations. Different vests and armors, with assayers and without, small or big head - you get the idea.

Bitkin-410 has dots on each side of the assayer initials (I see at least the second dot in yours)

It also has the crown in the legend above the head

Nice coin, congrats! I've been eyeing the Peter I Roubles series as a potential direction for a few years now.

  • There we go. An additional OK variety identifier that PCGS, or others that I can see, hadn't officially recorded yet in the grading system. It's an -OK-, crown above head, cuirassed, w/ clasp, w/ arabesque, edge 1719, Bit-410. If anyone can send me a cut from the Bitkin Catalogue on this variety it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you TwoKopeiki!!!

Here it is. If you need to have a full catalogue, write me a message.

    Peace.
