SLQ Acid Date Test

CRHer700CRHer700 Posts: 2,066 ✭✭✭✭✭

The recent pondering about whether it is possible to bring up the worn off date of an SLQ with ferric chloride got me in the mood to find out. I will be using several ingredients:

  1. My bottle of pure ferric chloride, useful for dating Buffalo nickels and staining wood an unpleasant puke color.

  2. Q-tips. An essential tool.

  3. Paper towels. (Sorry, not pictured.)

  4. Coins. As you can see, I have 11 dateless SLQS. They are grouped from least to most worn, except the two on the left which are an S mint and a D mint.

My first test will be on the coin with the best details, just to see if it will work. If I can’t do it on the best one, then I sure can’t do it on the rest.

Feel free to guess what dates I’ll get and how many.
Remember that the two to the left are an S and a D, and that a few towards the right may have a mintmark that is worn off as well, so you can guess that too.
I’ll update about the first coin soon.

I think you need a stronger acid.

Nitric is more strongly oxidizing but you need to be very careful as you can dissolve the entire coin.
