Gehrig signed baseball?

Hi. Does anyone have any opinion on whether this Gehrig signed ball looks like it would be worth submitting to PSA? Does anyone see any red flags here, or see anything that indicates this is not real? I just don't want to submit if people see things wrong with this. Thank you for your feedback, much appreciated.

Was looking into the ball itself - I don’t see that particular model on this site: https://harwoodbaseball.com/dating-harwood-baseballs/

It’s closest to the 1947 model which would make a legit Gehrig auto impossible. But since it doesn’t match any of them, it could be from before he died. Everything pre-1947 says “National” or “Professional”, not “Official”, so I’m not sure what that means.

  • OK, thanks, @burghman . Yeah, I was looking at the same thing, and this was closest I found to the right timeframe. This site shows one that looks pretty close, and it mentions 1930.

  • Turns out the ball is from Etsy. I found the guy who made it. He has made thousands of balls. Been doing it for at least 9 years, and he said this was one of 12 he made for a guy who lives in Illinois. Can you imagine how many people have been totally screwed by scammers with baseballs like these? These replica balls are no different than counterfeit 100 dollar bills, plain and simple. Matter of fact, that's exactly what I paid for this ($100).

So, this is what happens when you allow 'replicas' to be sold. They're not replicas. They are counterfeit. Same situation as all these counterfeit cards you see everywhere. If the item doesn't have actual permanent wording that says 'reprint' or 'replica' (you can't even make it permanent, so it should be illegal), then it should be illegal.

Good work on tracking that down.

He is not misrepresenting anything and he seemingly isn't getting rich off this - the prices are pretty reasonable.

The problem is with the person who buys this stuff and then resells it as original.

But future buyers also have to do their due diligence. There are fakes out there and always will be. You thought you were getting an authentic Lou Gehrig autographed baseball for $100? :#

  • @JBK , no, I did not necessarily think it was original. I was taking a chance on it, because I have bought and authenticated Gehrig before.

But, when someone has a ball that is intentionally made to look like an original (counterfeit), which is deliberately made for deception, no matter whether it was received for free or for $10k, it is counterfeit...and the seller describes it as original and signed by Gehrig, then yeah, it is worth taking a chance.

But, see, it's people like you perpetuating this, so I don't appreciate it. Joke all you want, but it's fake/counterfeit, and you right, they're everywhere. But, no, they should not be allowed, any more than all the fake/counterfeit cards should be allowed on eBay (don't even get me started on all that).

What are these counterfeit balls and cards made for? They are made for deception, to trick the mind/eye, plain and simple. Just cause the first guy sells them for dirt cheap as 'reprints' or 'replicas' (they are neither of those, they're counterfeit, cause they're designed to look exactly the same as originals), doesn't mean the guy is innocent. No, the guy is not innocent, and it doesn't matter how much he's making.

Matter of fact, if he's not making a lot of of it, then he is screwing over a lot of people, and not even making a huge profit, which is really messed up, cause he's screwing people over for nothing. These scammers need to get a regular fn job, instead of screwing people over. No, it doesn't matter one bit, whether the first guy sold a counterfeit cheaper. It is illegal, just like a counterfeit $100 is illegal to own. It's just that Etsy and eBay allow it cause they profit from it. It's effed.

Your attack on me is unjustified and inappropriate, and your constant assertions that that the Etsy seller is doing something illegal is also unwarranted and libelous, and is therefore presumably a violation of the forum rules. You don't have to take my word for it. I'll report your post to them and they can decide.

The bottom line is that your greed led you to buy a baseball that was not what you thought it was. The time to ask questions is before you buy it.
