Newbie with blue,green,white corroded.coins

Hello everyone. I'm a shiny newbie so please.be gentle with comments. I have hundreds of various.mercury dimes,Indian head pennies, silver foreign coins etc......sadly they were in my father's basement during a flood. Should I assume from the current condition none would have any significant value?

I'm tempted to dump them all into an ultrasonic cleaner. Many I don't even know what they are. I don't want to make a.mistake that could ruin something worthwhile.

Advice is greatly appreciated.

The silver coins still have value. The copper ones probably not, sorry

The silver coins will always at least have silver value no matter what they look like. Unfortunately, for the base metal coins there is little hope.

    Welcome to the forum! :)

Sadly, the damage is done. :'(
You could try an ultrasonic cleaner on a few of them and see what kind of results you get.
You may end up needing a coin dip cleaning agent like e-Zest or MS-70.
Do not scrub the coins with steel wool or any other kind of abrasive.

Put all the US .900 fine silver coins in one place. They will probably be worth nearly 20x face value at today's silver price.

Put any foreign silver coins in another place. They may bring some money but will be heavily discounted below silver value.

The corroded copper coins likely have little value.

    All glory is fleeting.

I bought ezest but it doesn't have a dipping basket. How the heck do they expect.me.to get the coon dipped? I can't find anyone who sells the plastic upside.down umbrella.dip thingies

  • Ok after a prolonged dip in water and simply green ultimate 1:5 and 13 minutes in the ultrasonic some came.out readable. I'm trying the next batch after a 12 hr soak

if you are able to read the dates and mint marks, you should at least search for any rare coins. For example, a 1916 Denver Mercury dime would be worth quite a bit, even if in a bad condition. For pennies, a 1909 SVDB, 1914d, 1931s could be worth some money, even if in terrible condition. There are other rare dates and denominations which also might be worth some money as well.

  • Good advice. I saw a coin app 'coinsnap' I was going to teynout to save time. Also when my daughter was born 10 years ago I let her mom go through pennies for Wheaties. I have a box with 6- 10 thousand. Time to go look on it. Ugh. I need to find some.patience for that
