Decide whether you want to put together a meaningful collection or just stash some bullion.

Where is a good place to start collecting them? Looking for coins that are not too too expensive. What do I need to be able to make sure the coins are real and not fake? Good places to buy them from that are less chances to sell fakes or over priced garbage?

"not too expensive" means different things to different people.
Stick to certified material. PCGS, CAC, and maybe NGC/ANACS.

I would avoid the sellers of coins who advertise on television. In my opinion, the prices they ask are quite high. Somebody's got to pay for the TV time, which is not cheap, so they factor that into their pricing.

Nobody has mentioned the US mint which sells modern coins, generally, current year and sometimes, recent years as well. Occasionally, they have nice issues (in my opinion), but for gold and silver, the prices are also quite high. Check out their website and you can get a schedule of coins being sold in 2024 if still available. Some are probably sold out. These are all modern issues which may or may not be what you're looking for.

  • Maybe better trying to put a collection of Kennedy half dollars together or Eisenhower dollars. Morgans at least on ebay seems to be full of cheap fake coins, Many on there selling them by the boatload for very cheap.

Definitely work with a dealer you can trust, there have been several recommendations for Northeast Numismatics, and I'll add mine as well. They are fair, great to deal with and you can trust them and the coins they sell.

You keep referencing the cheap fakes that are all over ebay... I am not sure how you are searching or what you are looking for but that is not what I typically see on ebay. The vast majority of Morgan Dollars offered are genuine, yes, there will always be fakes here and there but certainly not all over the place. Do you want circulated ones? Uncirculated? Toned or white?

If you just want a nice one for type, I would suggest picking up an 1880, 81, or 82, S-mint coin. They are common and can come very nice. If I am not too out of touch with prices, a standard BU coin (MS62-ish) will run about $50. Eye appeal will vary. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong on that price point.

I get the sense that he wants inexpensive. It is easy to buy 62-ish certified Morgans from any of the numerous sources we suggested. But he finds a problem with all of them.

This guy seems serious about coin collecting, however inexperienced he may be. Like it or not, we were all there once.

EXCUSE ME!!!! Wonder why more people do not try to collect coins because they get toxic people like you to say stupit stuff like this!

Going through change is a valid idea but just does not fit me very well or a lot of people who do not use cash very often any longer. I think I will get a half dollar and dollar roll of coins from the bank and see what I find and start their.

Everyone starts some place and looking to learn a lot and it sucks that there are no local coin shops near me and all the dealers I have been pointed to tend to deal with only the higher end coins.

So you are willing to go to the bank, at least? Earlier, it appeared that you were not willing to do anything.

Learning about coin collecting requires some motivation and effort on the part of the collector. It's not something that can or should be spoon fed. If one is unwilling to do the very simplest tasks for ones self (like using Google to look up the websites for Heritage and GC, for example), it seems unlikely that one will succeed in building a coin collection at any level.

Just being realistic; no offense intended. :)

I am perfectly willing to learn and put in the work with coin collecting. I was asking about sites as I have found there are how many sites out there that give bad and wrong information. Not to mention seems sites that sell fakes as well. Like since I started looking I get sites on facebook offering a full set of Morgans for 99 dollars.

Only was asking for sites others know and trust that will give real info and possibly trusted coins. Why make it harder for newer people to get into collecting, More so when it seems there are all these fake apps and sites that say they can price coins and are clearly giving bad info.

@oumpaa11 it seems like you want to collect old coins like Morgan's. You've been given lots of good information. Some of us spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on these sites we recommended or ebay.
You can use this place as a resource before you buy.
I wish you luck whatever you choose to do.
I just get the feeling your not to serious about collecting old coins.

If you want low-cost, real, silver Morgans, consider sites like these below:

Just do a search of Money Metals, JM Bullion, SD Bullion, or Bullion exchanges and you will find all of them have nice looking, low cost, circulated and lower grade uncirculated Morgans available for under $40 each. There are plenty of Peace dollars available as well. Buy a few and see what you think of them.

After you do more research, then move up into the better dates, grades, etc. at the many other sites mentioned above.

I am very serious about collecting, just considering how much some of the morgans can cost. So was thinking of the half dollars that could be cheaper to get my hands on. In the end it will come down to how much I can afford vs am I serious about collecting.

I would not make the decision that way. You should collect what you are passionate about even if it means you rarely add a coin to the collection.

I remember encountering a daunting and rather steep learning curve several years back when I decided to get more serious about my coin collecting. So I’d like to offer helpful advice, but it’s tough because I’m having trouble pinning down your goals for your collection.

For instance, are you set on coins of a certain era, e.g. something like early 20th century or late 18th century?

How much does grade matter? Do you want the high detail of MS and AU coins, or do you gravitate more toward mid-grade or even heavily worn pieces?

One thought that occurred to me: if you’re talking about half dollars, and you’re willing to go as late as mid-20th century, Franklins aren’t heavily counterfeited, and on the whole, they seem quite affordable as a series.

Good place to find franklins? half dollar coin rolls?

  • ShurkeShurke Posts: 447 ✭✭✭✭

I don’t know about rolls. For individual coins I’d check places already mentioned above.

I did a quick search for PCGS certified Franklins on eBay, and there’s a ton of listings for MS64-65 in the $30-60 range. If you were looking for circulated or raw coins, you should be able to find them for less than that.

thank you, franklins are interesting and far more afforable

  • Still might start getting half dollar rolls, so if I start finding Kennedy half dollars that will work too since the odds of finding Franklyns in coin rolls is pretty slim

The first thing that I would do is join a local coin club and make some contacts, see what their collection looks like, ask questions, research online, visit a local coin shop and learn. Coin collecting is a marathon and not a sprint, be patient and take your time...

There is an acronym called VAM named after two gentlemen who studied and documented die marriages.

It is a fool proof way to collect Morgans and Peace Dollars

Several other series also use die marriages as a focal point in collecting.

Example... a PCGS or NGC 1886p VAM 21 is a specific coin, with specific die markers, resulting from the specific obverse and reverse marriage of the dies.

It is next to impossible to be conned using the VAM method with a minimal amount of research and study.

So much great advice here. Go visit the library or hit a bookstore, there are usually coin/currency sections, The Red Book is a great book to start with, lots of illustrations, values, and information. Searching through rolls from a bank is fun and sometimes can yield treasures. If you don't have a coin shop near you, go online, shop and find one-they'll mail to you...and you can get a good idea of pricing related to grading (quality)
