Have you seen a 2006-D Jefferson nickel with a similar weak "D" mint mark?

I found this coin in a roll of circulated coins from a bank. I took photos with increasing magnification and with oblique lighting from different sides to try to show how faint it is. I added a (faint) red circle around the mint mark. I have seen nothing similar on eBay although there were several with less-than-robust "D" marks. How about you, my eagle-eyed numismatist friends? Seen anything like it? Any ideas how it could be produced? I have read about "filled" mint marks - filled with dirt, or grease, or metal.

Looks like a grease filled mint mark. ;)

Agree, probably a grease filled mint mark, not uncommon.

Now.....that's interesting! But what someone would pay for it?

Buyer paid $5.00 + $4.26 for this one.

I see greased out mint mark quarters sell for $5.00-$10.00.

It’s ironic, OP has a real no mint mark. Does he dare write “no mint mark” in the title?

It’s amazing to see how many new collectors look for errors while knowing absolutely nothing about the series or what a “no mint mark” coin even means. To them this is an error. The V in TRUST on Peace dollars is an error. Most of this is thanks to YouTube, Etsy, Pinterest and several other sites who helps to create all of these newly discovered errors.

I have not seen one and I have gone through probably more 2006 Jeffs than anyone in building the #1 circ strike set. I would say a filled die but it does not appear to actually be filled. Interesting for sure.

As others have said, probably a grease filled mintmark. Nice pictures, by the way.
