1983-D DDO - did PCGS make a mistake?
I recently submitted a 1983-D cent for the DDO FS-101 (https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1983-d-1c-ddo-fs-101-rd/569360).
I compared this coin to the images on Variety Vista and Wexler's. It has all of the die markings. Now, PCGS is saying that I have to resubmit it and pay for them to take another look. I sent them a PDF with photos, but I guess they don't have time for that.
I am happy with the grade - they just didn't give me the variety attribution. Let me know what you think. I have attached a PDF of the photos - and here is a picture of the main doubling on the ear.
Thanks.
Tony

did you make mention of the pcgs coin number &/or variety on the submission form?
I'd put an FS-101 sticker on that.
If you want PCGS to add the attribution to it and not have to pay, I'd take it to a show and show them your original paperwork and discuss with someone in person how they can fix it. They'd have to take it back with them, since they don't do varieties at shows.

I think that PCGS sees this as a plating blister not the double ear.

The shape of the lobe is odd
Yes, but nevertheless, it's duplicated on several coins with the same die markers, as illustrated in the PDF by the OP. When I first saw it, I thought it might be a die break, but it's not. It could be a die gouge that has a similar appearance to the 84 doubled ear, or it could be a legit doubled ear. Whichever it is, it is a match for FS-101.

Yes, I did submit it as a variety and I paid the attribution fee. The shape of the lobe might be odd, but the other die markers in the PDF match. I would be happy to take it to a coin show, but we don't have very many coin shows in the Georgia area where PCGS actually attends. And like @messydesk said - they don't have graders there.
I've received grades from PCGS that I didn't agree with - but grades are subjective. And I was very happy with the grade on this coin (MS63RB). I've only had one other submission come back without a variety, but it was on a worn buffalo nickel and I could see how they would say it wasn't that variety. For this one - all of the details are there. I appreciate your responses.

Perhaps the doubling wasn't enough of the variety. If a buyer, I'd want the full effect/details. And not just a label that says it is.
