I saw this auction listing with bidder identities protected. What does it really mean, and why does EBay allow this?

It happens quite often and I don’t know why eBay permits it.
All it does is protect someone from shill bidding.
How does it protect shill bidding? And what is meant by “private listing”
Planning another one of your eBay returns?
I'm guessing that you meant to say that it protects the seller from having their shill bidding revealed.
In the old days ebay would show the actual bidder IDs, unless it was set to be a private auction.
Since they no longer show the actual IDs, all a private auction does is prevent you from looking at some aspects of the bidders' bid history, which might reveal something about their strategy, or if they are a possible shill bidder on that seller.
It is kinda like here, a member can make their profile private so that no one can see it. A lot of people like their privacy and it is their choice.

Why is that ?
Well, we don't make the polices/rules. We just agree to follow them or decide to go elsewhere. These members have a right to have this option if they so choos and we also have the same option - to stay or leave. I choose to stay.

I was simply trying to point out how some high profile person may want to protect their identity, could have been anyone. Not political at all.
.
Also, not my fault that a member has his pants twisted in a knot.. because of the loss.
