I wouldn’t have cracked that….

U1chicagoU1chicago Posts: 6,028 ✭✭✭✭✭

This was an interesting decision by a seller that has been discussed before. We have seen examples of details coins cracked out and sold without disclosing the issue. We have also seen super frosty examples in the photos when a coin wasn’t even pl in the holder. However, I’m surprised the seller cracked this toner that went for strong money at GC in the Anacs holder. While I liked the coin, I felt the colors weren’t quite right (possibly QC at PCGS and thus sold in the Anacs holder). There did not appear to be much upside trying to sell this raw (if it was market acceptable, having it in a PCGS holder would have maximized the value and if not MA, then leaving it in the Anacs slab was best). I wonder if the seller will take the loss or cancel the sale.

Agreed, very puzzling decision making process by the seller.

    An unusual and peculiar look.

It's a $55 coin. Now give it a dip of the Weimans and make her beautiful again. RGDS!

There is risk in any crack out.

  • Phenomenal toning should add a sizable premium to that coin. The color should easily pass muster at NGC or PCGS, if submitting is the current owner's plan.

That's sort of the opposite point to the OP

Cracking definitely wasn’t the safe option here. If I had to guess, I’d say the seller was hoping potential buyers might misgrade the coin and bid hoping to land a 64 or 65 when they submit it.

I’m assuming the owner attempted to submit it raw to PCGS, and it came back with a details grade.

With the volume they do, it’ll barely be a blip on the radar.

At least they didn't say it was from an "original collection".

    You sure about that?
The ANACS auction ended October 6th.
I'd think mailing time from GC and then the listing date as a "raw coin" would prohibit getting PCGS opinion of the coin.

That’s my thinking too. There wasn’t enough time in between unless someone did an express in-person submission.

That’s true. However some are riskier than others. And some make less sense than others. This was an example where the risk to reward ratio did not seem to be in favor of cracking. I would have tried a crossover to PCGS with any non-details grade as the parameter.

I wouldn't make that assumption with that seller. He's more famous for cracking everything out, PCGS or not, and selling it raw.

That and the fact that the seller in question prefers to sell raw.

I recently bought some raw toned coins from Ebay. They were really nice IMHO, but after questioning the seller I changed my opinion
The seller got upset when I asked if he used comical and got kinda nasty and said he only uses Tap water and heat. I compromised and the sent sent me a 50% refund and said keep the coins. The refund was $12.20.

The nickels look close to plausible but the quarter is definitely QC. Even at the full price you paid, that wasn’t too bad since some of the decent looking AT sells (I wouldn’t be surprised if those nickels went for $10-$20 each). Just don’t spend the money getting them graded-that’s where the tuition can get expensive.

@johnny010 This Ebay seller got real defensive after Mr 1st message to him.Using heat to make a toned coin is not a seller that will get my business ever again.

What area and state are they in? I do not want to drink the tap water there.

Will the original dollar in this thread be relisted? I have found many times some sellers seem to shill and sometimes end up with it themselves.
