Nice Half Dollar Box Recovery

CRHer700CRHer700 Posts: 1,919 ✭✭✭✭✭

I recently got a box of halves from my bank (a normal occurrence), and was to say the least, disappointed, as the box was probably 80% 2024-P with no enders. I did however open the box, and was pleased to find that it was not only not a skunk, but turned out to be my best box of the year. I got a 1945 walker and a 1949-D Ben, both of which are firsts for me, along with nine 40%ers. I have only ever had one box that was better, and it was over a year ago, so I am pleased. Thanks for looking!

This 1917-S merc was from a box at the same place. Sorry about the shaky photos, I am certainly not a surgeon! :D

I am so old that I remember taking coins like those back to the bank!

If my tea leaves are accurate the '24-P's may never be much but were there any Gems?

With mintages higher than in years more may be saved. But these are being released in only a few places so few will have the opportunity to save them.

    Tough call.

I recall reading somewhere that you could still get full sets of walkers from searching in the fifties. I wish that I had been around then.

I didn't see any that I would call gems. However, this batch was slightly better than normal. Usually they are surprisingly dinged up; it reminds me of uncirculated double eagles.

Even though there were lots and lots of collectors most were children who couldn't afford half dollar collections so even the early mint marked dates circulated. However, these had premium in F and better so these were pulled. Most of what you saw was very low grade though often nice attractive coins. The '21-D and S were in awful shape when you saw them. I'm not even sure I ever saw the S mint in the Chicago area. I also never saw a '38-D since these were hoarded. The early coins were seen fairly regularly but the MM on obverse a little less. More of these got pulled by collectors.

The '55 was another half that wasn't seen often. The '49-S was a little less common here.

I never did find a 1938-D or a lot of the early dates. I got a complete set of Franklins from circulation.

Thank you, this is rare for me, and I have only ever had two times where I got more silver at one time.

From there I sit, it's completely random. You could go boxes, weeks or months with nothing ZERO! The next could be like winning the lottery!
