1963 Pete Rose rookie card question.

There's a PSA 9 Pete Rose rookie on EBAY with an asking price of 2 million dollars. Does anyone know the all time highest price this card ever sold for?

That's the last figure I have. So nothing has sold for almost three years?

I'd take an edumucated guess that since his recent passing, most if not all sellers of this card have grossly inflated their asking price.

Yes two million seems completely insane.

Others have sold, of course. The price of the card has gradually decreased.

I have been out of the hobby for over two decades until March of 2022. I never heard of VCP. I get my prices from EBAY and the PSA website.

I've suggested a better option to help you get your pricing questions answered. There's a vast amount of info available on the website. Do with it as you wish.

I did not mean anything bad with my comment. I meant I have no idea what VCP is. I will definitely look into it and thank you.

According to here on the PSACARD website, that exact 1963 Topps Pete Rose PSA 9 S/N 90259414 currently on eBay sold for $41,999.00 via a Buy It Now back in January 2019.

He's accepting offers- the lowest offer he will consider is 1.7 million.

  • If you take a bit of time to examine what the Million Dollar seller is doing on eBay, you would realize that he also cannot be serious.

  • That card has been around. Sold 8/20/23 for 84K, again 5/18/24 for 81K (less? D'OH!) and then 9/28/24 at the aforementioned price. It also sold 2/14/2021 for 116,100 in a PWCC auction.

I sold a PSA4 for $1600 a few months ago and am very happy with the price since I got the card new in a pack back in the day. An adequate return IMO. All that EBay nonsense is just that, there is always something grossly overpriced.

About 20 years ago a salesman who use to call on the company I worked for wanted to sell me (2) ungraded 63 Pete Rose RC. I bought a ton of other nice 62-66 Topps from him for about 1k. He wanted $500 each for the Rose RC. I passed like a fool.

I'd venture to say they had to be a PSA 4 or better. (sigh)
Live and learn.. .you'd think at 55 or so then I would have known better.
but on the other hand 1K was quite a bit of money back around 2000 and even now.

When I got married in the 90's I sold my entire collection. I got $2400 for a 1954 Hank Aaron rookie in PSA 8 condition. I got $500 for a 54 Kaline in PSA 8 and $800 for a 1954 Banks rookie in PSA 8 condition. I had every significant rookie card in PSA 8 from 1954-1968 besides 3 or 4. It took me almost 6 months to sell my entire collection which was all PSA cards and some unopened wax boxes. That's all the cards were worth back then plus the market was dead at that time. I was out of the hobby for over two decades.

Thx for your story Yankees70...it is interesting how the hobby has risen in value. If we only knew...that the hobby is now an investment as well.

I wonder if the new product over the last 10 years will enjoy the same value increase.

That hurts. The ones that got away. Hopefully you sold some ungraded Canseco rookies for $100, ungraded McGwire rookies for $175 etc... to balance that out a bit.

I sold 100 Topps Mattingly rookies for $20 each. That's all I remember selling for modern cards. It took me months to sell my collection. I only had one offer over $2,000 for the 54 Aaron which by the way was a high end 8. When I purchased the card in an auction it was described as being Mint and being one of the best Aaron's out there. I submitted the card to a place called Sports cards plus in Laguna Niguel who then sent it to PSA. When it was submitted I was told it had a decent chance of receiving a PSA 9. At that time I don't think PSA gave out 8.5 grades.

Well for now I am fortunate to have some 2017 Bowman Mega boxes put away. Waiting a while longer when to dispose of them what with Ohtani fever riding high.

I sold short on my 85 Topps McGwire rookies. During the run up to his HR record I liquidated mine at $50 per. Was concerned an injury might curtail his chase. In the same way people were concerned an injury might befall Ripken in his quest. Only had $5-$8 in each one so I got out early. The card eventually peaked at $250 then fell with the steroid issue. You never know when the right time is. Win some, lose some.
