Son and I were detecting in local park built in 1980s.was not expecting to find silver.our question being is this a error coin or do we have stars in our eyes lol.im seeing letter below epluribus next to bottom left torch

Damage.
Pareidolia.
Just damage, what you are seeing is pareidolia induced by extreme magnification. All too common by the microscope users that have become so prevalent today.

It's not the right shape for a D mintmark used that year.

An unusual shape.... but certainly damage IMO, as other damage is clearly shown on the rest of the reverse. But hey.... finding silver is awesome!
I was considering it an S, not a D. However, it was more of a joke than anything.

generally, don't clean your coins... but how do you know what it is if you can't clean them...

In my mind you already win by spending time with your son outdoors detecting. Finding silver is icing on the cake!
