What is your opinion/experience on gambling key date PR70 silver eagles?

I've won on some, lost on most.

The ones I didn't expect to get 70 did, and the ones I thought would get 70 ended up as 68 or 69.

But I guess that is how it goes sometimes with every coin.

I can't complain but I can say it's not what I envisioned.

It's not Eagles, but I recently sent in some modern world coins. A few were for series I collect and the rest were just coins that I thought had a nice design. I was expecting a mix of 69 and 70 grades. I usually don't think a 70 is guaranteed (even when all coins look flawless to my eye) but with enough sent, the odds are there will be some in the submission. This time I did not do as well as before. Out of six coins, only one returned as 70 (it was for my main series so that was good). Four were 69 grades, and one was a 68 (that was the surprise since nothing looked off where it would drop below 69).

Sent in two 1995-W proofs. Both graded 69.

The only ASE "key date" to me is the 95-W. Add the 19-S ERP for those who collect beyond the "basic" set. The others aren't.

PCGS has now graded about 9% of submitted 95-Ws a "70" versus 2 the first time I checked the population reports though don't remember the counts at the time. The odds are much higher now.

More than half of the 19-S ERP are graded a "70", so better than a coin flip even for most who can't tell the difference.

I might catch some shade for this but I actually hate eagles, but I love submitting a $60 coin and getting $900. For that kinda money I'll call anything a key date 😅

I sent in 3 86 ASEs last month. I thought they would 70, 69, 68. (to note, these were for a client, and I told him my opinion prior to submission).

    they all 69'd.

I guess I got it right on the average.....So, I'm pretty much 0-3.

Same here, i dont deal or collect moderns, but I do review a few for customers that get mint orders in, and have a pretty good rate at getting a 70.

Only modern coin I have is a 95-w eagle becuase in my opinion its the key eagle, especially because of how it was obtained. that enhanced reverse proof was pretty much saved from day one. The other I would possibly keep is the v75 gold, due to the extremely low mintage, missed out at mint release, but one day one will come thru

Weren't the 95-W eagles also "saved from day one"? ???

I bought a 1986 PSE in an NGC cracked case, it looked like the glue had failed in holding the holder together, the certification said PR70 but they denied the reholder, saying that it wasn't a 70. It's hard to imagine why someone would take a real NGC holder and insert a non70 coin in it. I paid $150 to the dealer I got it from thinking they would reholder. Probably a $70 coin at best in a 69 holder.

My concern with the silver eagles and other silver coins (early Maples, ouch) isn’t the grading but the random spotting.
That is too much of a gamble for me to pay anything high over typical bullion cost for my silver.
I see various Canadian mint half ounce and 1 ounce coins on sale from large dealers near spot because of the spotting.

Now riding the swell in PM's and surf.

Once they get spotted it’s game over. Even tough getting melt for them. Many if even offer will low ball heck out if them.
