As long as you have been collecting coins- is there ever a coin that surprises you?

I've been married 25+ years. In social settings when either I or my wife tell an interesting story the other will know pretty much how it will be told and how it'll end.
It is rare for a part of her life to be re-told I am not aware of yet. It does happen- on rare occasions- and when it does I am always mildly surprised and delighted.
Well, I think about this dilemma and correlate it with coins.
I am suprised when an interesting variety pops up I have never seen nor heard of before.

Here is such a coin.
(not mine):

Has that happened with you?
A coin you didn't know exists and them out of the blue- there it is!

If a nice coin of a tougher date/MM combination in my primary collection shows up (for sale or in the TPG data), I'm somewhat surprised. I know there are some out there, but these very infrequently appear.

Yes, my biggest surprises over the years have occurred when I have found a coin in my collection I didn't know I had.

This forum and the Cherrypickers guide have turned me on to quite a few varieties and errors I wasn't aware of.

It still concerns me today... My biggest fear, having something significant or rare in my collection I don't know I had.

Yes! That 75 no S dime on GC that’s going for the price of a nice 3/2 home.
Mind boggling. Never heard of it before all the hoopla.

Having fun while switching things up and focusing on a next level PCGS slabbed 1950+ type set, while still looking for great examples for the 7070.

Yes, a 1937 Washington Quarter purchased for melt - I picked through a bulk assortment and it stood out as being in nicer condition. I took it home and looked up the value, and lo and behold it was the DDO.

Yes, I have been a collector/dealer for over 50 years and I had never heard of the 1943/1942S Cent. I don't think it wasn't known 40+ years ago when I stopped searching cent boxes for wheats. And for the last 35 years, my main focus has been obsolete currency, but I still buy and sell some coins.

I know quite a bit after all of these years but I'll bet that there's still more that I DON'T know than I do. So, I'll stick around and keep on learning and teaching for the mutual benefit of all of us.

This board is a great resource but only if those will knowledge contribute, so this should always be encouraged.

Collector and dealer in obsolete currency. Always buying all obsolete bank notes and scrip.

Two feather buffalos, I remember thinking what the heck is that when I first heard the term.
