“Pet peeve - Why can’t collector/dealer sites show original asking prices once coins are sold.?

My biggest pet peeve is looking at dealer and collector sites and not seeing original asking price once a coin has been sold. It hurts my keeping up with watching price trends.

Is it too much to ask to see what the original asking price was of a coin even after the coin was sold?

This is not asking to see what final sale orice was of each coin as I understand that it might be confidential.

Only auction houses disclose final selling prices.

It is funny you stated this, as I agree. I see it all the time on the BST forum. Once a coin is sold the seller will edit his thread to reflect it is sold and then completely delete what it was that sold.
I'd find it interesting if the seller edited his title to add, "SOLD" yet didn't change the text of the post.

One of my pet peeves is unnecessarily vague thread titles.
For example, this one could have been:

“Pet peeve - Why can’t collector/dealer sites show original asking prices once coins are sold?”

You are right. LOL I just forgot to make the thread title more complete. I just continued with the thread title in the body of the thread.

    Corrected.

Thank you for pointing this out.

Gerry Fortin shows past sold prices.

I think it is helpful to both buyers and consignors.

Other dealers might not have the sales volume or price level to make the cost of maintaining the pricing history worthwhile.

They certainly could show the original asking prices. My guess is that they don’t consider it important to do so (what’s the financial motive?), and probably have never given it any thought at all.

It’s also worth noting that a dealer’s asking price may differ (perhaps significantly so) from the actual sales price.

FWIW, when I sell on the BST, I always use the “strikethrough” function when I sell an item, so my asking prices are still visible after the sale. The curious are welcome to peruse my prior listings.

Nothing is as expensive as free money.

They don’t want to advertise how much they are willing to lop of the price of their offers.

Did not ask for that. Original asking price is good enough historical info.

My pet peeve is not getting an online dealer to respond to offers at all. I'd rather not add it to my cart and pay their asking price with everyone here saying dealers negotiate. Lol!

I have picked up the habit of changing items to sold or deleting completely. Sometimes I have been asked by the buyer to do that since they want to resell the coin and don't want the info left there. Other times I don't have a great reason besides just wanting to keep the information more private. If someone messages me and asks nicely, I will usually share the pricing info.

Try the Internet Archive Wayback Machine. I've had success with it many times for exactly this.
