Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee Meeting Recap (September 2024)
My name is Kellen Hoard, and I currently serve as one of the Representatives of the General Public on the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee. I am an undergraduate student, and the youngest person to ever serve on the Committee. For those of you unfamiliar with the CCAC, it was established in 2003 by Congress to advise the Secretary of the Treasury on the themes and designs of all US coins and medals. The CCAC serves as an informed, experienced and impartial resource to the Secretary of the Treasury and represents the interests of American citizens and collectors.
This is the fifth installment of my updates about what the CCAC is doing at its meetings. I think it is critical that the collecting community have insight into and input to the CCAC, and will try to answer any questions you may have.
Here is my update for the CCAC meeting on September 24, 2024.
Candidate designs for the for the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe Code Talker Congressional Medal were discussed in consultation with Cody Russell (Vice-Chairman of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe) and Dr. William Meadows (Professor of Anthropology and Native American Studies in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Gerontology at Missouri State University). Only one obverse and reverse design were available for review by the CCAC in the portfolio, and the CCAC approved the following designs with suggested revisions to ensure font consistency, among other minor edits.
Candidate designs for the 2025 Superman Comic Art Coin and Medal were discussed in consultation with Preston Lewis (Head of Consumer Products and Retail Strategy - Americas for Warner Bros. Discovery). Only one obverse and reverse design were available for review by the CCAC in the portfolio, and the CCAC approved the following designs (there are, however, inscription differences between the coin and medal). CCAC members spoke at length about their questions/comments/concerns on what/whether precedents were being set through commercial partnerships like this one; the full discussion is worth watching via the recording of the meeting if you are passionate about this subject.
Let me know if you have any questions about the work done in this meeting; I will try to answer as well as I can, but there are contraints on what I am able to share publicly. Please remember that the CCAC does not make the final decision; instead, it makes its recommendation (alongside the Commission of Fine Arts) to the Secretary of the Treasury. If you would like to watch the September meeting in full in order to see all of the deliberations, it is available on Youtube here.

Impressive credentials, young man.......I'm sure you've been told, but what a great last name!!😊
Thank you for the update. and your service on the committee. It's valuable and important to have your view from the inside.
The CCAC is going to great lengths to get designs right. But, as you know, there will always be criticism because you can't please all of the people all of the time.
Wish I could offer something constructive but you'll have to settle for praise only for now.
Kellen... we all owe a debt of thanks to you and your spirit of volunteerism. Thanks for sharing your info with us.
"Next year we could have an 8 cent nickel. Think what that would mean. You could go to a newsstand, buy a 3 cent newspaper, and get the same nickel back again. One nickel carefully used could last a family a lifetime." - Capt. Jeffrey T. Spaulding
Always grateful for you sharing these updates @KellenCoin!
Your efforts toward better coinage is appreciated. Believe Superman coin is not needed.
All commercial tie-ins should be dropped. NCLT issues are bad enough as it is.
Looks good to me!
