What is happening to my toning when I submit coins to NGC

AzurescensAzurescens Posts: 2,737 ✭✭✭✭✭

I've submitted a lot of toned modern bullion to NGC.. maples, key date proof eagles, etc

They always come back and most of the toning is gone. They don't appear dipped because some toning will remain.

Where is it all going and why?

Do other services do this too? I hate this.

I don't think any grading services will dip coin unless it's part of the conservation service requested by the submitter.
Do you have any before and after pics?

Ah man I could dig them up if I tried really hard but it is like thousands of images and there's no way I could match coin to coin at this point. They're just so wildly different that it would be guesswork.

I had a 25th anniversary maple with gorgeous green toning in a halo and it came back with barely any light color on the rims.

My proof eagles are even worse because they'll have this rich eggplant rim toning from the capsules and I get them back and it's like a mouse fart of toning almost like it was hardly ever there.

Idk, do they wash heavily toned coins with distilled water? Would that even take some toning away? I wanna submit more but I don't want basically plain coins back. I hate it.

I'm not paying for conservation or anything but I'm wondering if I'm clicking a box that I shouldn't?

I've submitted artificially toned coins that came back untouched but all my legit stuff looks like crap when I get it back.

They don't do anything to the surface of the coin. Hard to say without images.

That sounds like a good question for NGC.
I'd be miffed and be questioning NGC.
let us know, were curious as well.
Pictures and documentation will be needed.

Post across the street to get another opinion.
    I only submit to PCGS.

Ok so nothing jumps out to me here that this is something they do and I'm not accidentally doing conservation..

I guess it boils down to 1. Bad memory, 2. Maybe the slab bends the light or something idk, 3. I may be comparing washed out trueviews to my overly-honest personal photos. Or I guess, 4. It wasn't as nice as I had originally thought. I guess I could be mixing up coins too.

I will take pictures for my next submission and if it happens again I will update.

I'm not suggesting they do anything shady or something. I'm just trying to figure this out and cover my bases.

I've been overly pleased with their customer service and the grades I catch (even when they're not in my favor). They have integrity and consistency and I really like that, especially for the price.
