Should cards be labeled as the Year Issued or the Year they Represent

Just received a presale notification for UpperDeck The Cup hockey. Looking at the list of rookies I was puzzled that Bedard was not in the set. That is when I realized this presale is for 2022/2023 Upper Deck The Cup! The 2023/2024 season has already passed and they are issuing a new 2022/2023 set.

1948 Leaf baseball is widely regarded as 1949 because of players being on teams they were not on until 1949. The copyright says 1948 but I do not consider cards like Musial a rookie because he had a 1948 Bowman.

Maybe I am strange - but even with a rookie emblem I don’t think a set that was issued in 2024 has a player’s rookie card just because the set says 2022/2023.

The Cup is a regular annual issue for Upper Deck but it is time they skip a year and catch up. Curious what people think.

I have always considered the 1981 George Brett as his "1980 .390 MVP card", the 1968 Carl Yastrzemski as his "1967 Triple Crown" card, etc.

That may not be what you're asking, but that's my collecting preference.

Year issued…some cards use photos from several years past. For example…Aaron and Mays have same central image 1954-1956.

Thanks to those who responded. Looks like I am not alone in thinking a 2022/2023 set issued in September of 2024 is not a 2023 issue. If I were PSA I would label them 2024 The Cup.

Training camp for the 2024/2025 season started the same week this set was issued.

I never liked the multiple years used for hockey or basketball cards.

It's really confusing how for example, the 1986-87 Fleer b-ball set is labeled as 1986 by PSA yet in every other case it'd be called the 1987 season.
