Rattler prices

Anybody else notice the crazy prices on Rattler holdered coins these days? I have noticed it even at smaller, local coin shows. I have also noticed the supply at local shows is drying up. What are you seeing in your neck of the woods?

The premiums have been going through the roof, particularly for common date material, for about 3 years now. They are holding pretty much steady (some still climbing, especially those in better grades (65 and up). If you can find them cheap, grab them!
Yes, they have incredible demand over the past couple years and theyre getting harder and harder to find. Some dont even mind that the coin sucks, theyre more concerned with the slab. Others like @johnny010 put together gorgeous sets of really nice coins, and their participation leads to a robust market.

I will on occasion find an NGC Gen 2.1 slab for the right price. I do se a lot of NGC Gen 4 and later with prices that don’t make sense because they are “fattys”
Yes rattlers are highly desirable by enough people that premiums are healthy. I love the history of both the coin and the holder.
Anyone here collect them? Feel free to PM.
I just sold this one on GC for $230. I believe I paid around $35 for it 10 years ago. No complaints.

I own a handful of rattlers, should I sell them or hold them?
Depends on what you have. I’m just a collector but if you PM I can give you my opinion since I search high and low for these seven days a week.
I have that same slab box from amazon, but the plastic latches are garbage and keep popping off. Theres a guy on facebook who makes a well built version with quality hinges, I just bought one yesterday. Ill send you a video/pics when it gets here, but lmk if you want me to send you his info.

I'd love to see more responses to this . . .as it is quite interesting to me.
Slightly more seasoned members may remember my Doily days. Sold and moved on to Ratts. I'd love to know the answer to the OP's question. I have a gut feeling these are the 'next' holder to climb, but I'll leave that to the better prognosticators.

@johnny010: that’s a great pic! Especially like those ones in the middle with Nick’s frames. If you want, feel free to check out my sets while you’re on that 7 day search - admire your dedication!

There is a limited supply and over the years it has continued to drop from crackouts. Who knows how many remain but it's no doubt way less then 20 years ago. I noticed the Dealer supply dropping off over the years but in the last year or so it is very apparent at the smaller shows I regularly attend. That's my question for everyone here. I'm in the Midwest. What have you east and west coast people observed?
I am a very small partime dealer I have maybe 13 rattlers in my showcase and I have only sold one 30’s red Lincoln cent that was cac for 80.00 over greysheet. Sold one cac Morgan on the bst.
The rest of the rattlers have sat for the last 3 shows mostly Morgan’s and mercury dimes . Nothing priced over 120.00 mercs are less than 100.00 Very puzzled why they are not moving. Other dealers at these small shows really do not have much in the way of old holders , like maybe
8 slabs spread out amongst everyone.
Just my az observations.

Dan these cases are plastic indeed BUT the design is different from what I’ve seen and there are two inner mounting points that allow for locks….see attached and let me know if this is better than what you’ve seen before.

I can answer any market questions you have on Morgan rattlers. Many of my coins I’ve paid 2x to 3x for in their holders for the grade not counting gold CACs which are in a different category all together.
Example: my 1903 65 PL which did end up getting a CAC sticker….October
1989 pop report shows only SIX 1903 65PLs in rattler, none higher. From a Morgan rattler collectors standpoint, this is a grail coin.
Yep, that’s it…
Here are the hinges right now, at least one of them pops off virtually every time I use it.

If you Google rattlers, and look hard enough, you’ll find an unrelated site where @Mfeld suggested many rattlers had been picked over dating back to 2008 (Mark, not trying to skew your words just going from memory here). Looking back to 2010 I see commentary by others in random coin forums about pricing and grading and cracking etc. sentiment even 14 to 16 years ago was the good coins were worth leaving in the holders and I’m glad to have found many that fit that bill.
Now, the market does brings strong for CAC coin. Similarly related, I have also run into collectors that have coins never brought to market / inherited and wanted to sell almost all of which have received a CAC or gold CAC sticker. My math says the last few years and maybe the next three years we will see more rattlers coming to market similar to the Texas hoard auctioned at HA last March. Fingers 🤞
Well heck-fire. When you get your new case please let us all know if it’s reliable and worthy of field use. Nothing worse than traveling and having a case fall apart. If you vouch for the new one, I’ll be a customer as well.
Great call out @ndeagles makes phenomenal holders for these 1.2 holders and they are better than the ones that come with the Zircon cases.
