I truly like the coin. Didn't know of the JR-5 version. I must read more about these patterns.

I saw this example of 1814 JR-5 this morning (credit: GFRC ) which is graded PCGS VF25. Please use this example as a measure to compare my example to (at least with regard to the grade).

(I hope this is OK and allowed).

VF25. Yours looks slightly less worn than the example but not enough to bump it up to a 30 IMO.

I believe it would grade vf20. Comparison coin's leaves are little more defined as well as ear. JMO

    VF30 IMO, nice original coin.

I would grade it VF20 from the images. The drapery merges with the bust which is usually a quick indicator for me that it shouldn’t grade higher. Then I let the rest of the details decide 15 vs 20.

I like the VF area. I am curious with what is going on near nose and mouth, not looking like die clash. Also could have an old cleaning that has retoned, but like the look.

I like it at VF-20. Can't get more solid than that crusty look!

Thank you, everybody for your comments.

This example came to me in a small group of Capped Bust Dimes I bought at a Bowers & Merena auction in the early 90"s. The lot also contained an 1809 and an 1822 dime.

This is the 2nd. example of 1814 JR-5 in my collection. This example is ex. Stacks auction in the mid 90"s.
