Babe Ruth died in 1948 worth $800,000.
That equals $10 million dollars in 2024.

Says nothing about either guy, but the money in America today is simply amazing.

If MJ played basketball in 1948 he’d be worth a lot less and Ruth if he played in the 1990’s a lot more today.

It's interesting that Jordan got this rich despite a severe gambling addiction. Particularly on the golf course. He is well known in sports gambling circles as one of the surest marks in golfing. He plays just good enough to constantly get hustled.

Then again, maybe this is old news, and he has smartened up and clamped down on his addictive bad habits?

You can lose a hundred grand here and there when your a billionare

Also Im sure his gambling isn't just on the golf course, he might make some of his losses back in other gambling venues

Jordan might be a whale at the casinos, or maybe it's Charles Barkley I'm thinking of. Could be both, I forget.

I know Phil Mickelson was a whale at the casinos and at one time was reported to owe them around 8 million dollars in unpaid markers. Not sure what his status is today on that.

I used to play a lot of blackjack at The Mirage in Vegas in the 90s.

Once had the pleasure to sit across the pit and watch MJ play a stack of purples ($500 each), about an inch high plus. It was interesting to watch, but I wasn't able to see his cards, so can't comment on my opinion of his blackjack skills. He didn't seem phased a bit when he won or lost thousands. He was very affable, some people gathered around, but respected his space. Nice experience and memory.

I once saw Michael playing blackjack at Caesars Palace. Same experience. I don't know if it was a personal bodyguard, or casino security, but he had a big guy watching his back and keeping people at bay. So I watched from a distance with a small crowd of others.

He sold the Bobcats for 3 billion, netting a profit of 2.25 billion on the sale.

He held the team for 13 years

I once sat at a blackjack table in A/C, I forget which casino. Anyway i'm sitting at third base, where I always used to sit, it's a quarter table, the table was full. I never paid much attention to the other players, just following the card play to see if the deck appeared to be favorable or not, etc.

Well there was a guy sitting in the middle of the table, and the cards were not being very friendly for the players for a length of time, we're all losing, and this guy starts blowing smoke in the dealer's face from his cigarette. Smoking on the casino floor was allowed at the time.

It wasn't just once, the guy kept doing it again and again, and finally the dealer cracked, and as politely as possible, I mean super politely, asked the guy to please not blow smoke in his face. Well the guy stood up in an uproar and screamed quite loudly at the dealer at least a few times, "Do you know who I am?" Well I didn't recognize the guy at all. The pit boss came over and calmed down the situation quickly, and didn't throw the guy off the table or anything. And that's about it.

Ever see the movie, "American Hustle"? Based on a true story.

Before the movie came out, years earlier the scam happened, and in the newspaper there was a pic of the New Jersey legislator involved in the scam, and I recognized the guy immediately who was the idiot blowing smoke in the dealer's face. I think he served prison time. Karma, I guess. LOL

  • Oh. I got all excited here for a moment. I thought you were referring to his rookie card. :D

    Enjoy the go.

His driver in Nascar can't win shit.
He had the pole in a must win situation and could not pull out a win for the 23 car .
He is a terrible driver even with and all that money it can't make him any better.

As I remember him he could barely walk but that was in the late 40's. He passed away in 1948. I was listening to the radio when they had a news bulletin interrupting the program he had passed.

Ruth just played at the wrong time. MJ mad the vast majority of his money off the court with his shoe, commercials, and then the absurd profit of the sale of the NBA team he owned. Losing a million dollars gambling to a billionaire is like a normal person losing 20 bucks.

Even though less money was available for endorsements Ruth did get hosed with the Baby Ruth candy bar nonsense where he got no money for it
