2024 Long Beach Sep 5-7, 2024 - Who's Going & Special Requests

ProofCollectionProofCollection Posts: 6,253 ✭✭✭✭✭

The Long Beach show is next weekend: https://www.pcgs.com/shows/detail/6750

As advertised, PCGS' Steve Feltner will be there from 10:30-12:30 on Thursday and Friday.

I can't attend but I'm hoping someone here will attend and can ask him a few questions on my behalf. At the top of my list are:
1. The state of PCGS Trueviews. Does management know they are awful now, are they doing anything to fix it, etc...?
2. Why are they slabbing Cal Fractional Gold like this? Are they out of inserts or is this the new way going forward?

3. Will PCGS reconsider allowing AU grades to have PL designations? Now that CAC in addition to NGC supports AU PL grades, it is prohibitive to cross these coins to PCGS, why not 'join the party?' I believe Steve (or someone at PCGS) has previously stated that they don't because there is no "market demand" for this but I think they should reconsider.

I'm sure forum members may have more questions...

I'm planning to spend the day at the show on Thursday but it's a turnaround for me as I'm flying down and back on the same day. Not sure I'll have a chance to spend time in the Feltner line (and there usually is a long one). I have a pickup from Stacks and a drop off at GC as well as a lot of specific shopping planned.

As I posted in another thread, seems like the new Tampa show might be stealing a bit of the Long Beach thunder as many Easter Coaster's, including DLRC and CACG, are not on the exhibitor list:

I’ll be there, but I’m not patient enough to wait in that line either, it’s always really long. About the Trueviews, I really think they are experimenting with automating the editing process and I expect it will get better, but this is just my guess and also based on my experience with making coin image templates. I hope they improve and also hope they end up offering a higher level tier where you pay extra and have a real person tweak the image after it’s automatically generated. I can easily edit them myself for personal use to make them match the coin better, but in the future if/when someone looks up the cert number they will see the original one.

I wont be at this one, but I have a friend submitting some coins for me and Ill be at the Tampa show the following weekend.

If anyone wants to stop by and say hi to @rarity7, he will be there with a ton of pq inventory and is always very friendly and approachable if you have any questions.

Was hoping to see you there, Dan. Will Noah have a table or is he just busking the bourse floor? I'd check the exhibitor link I posted above but it lists the "S" dealers under the "R" heading and no dealers beginning with an R (or a 7, for that matter).

No, it's wedged into the insert.

That's equally concerning IMO. It has a chance of breaking loose, not to mention the inconvenience of having a sliver of the coin obscured by plastic.

I've never been, is it worth driving about 350 miles?

No, but it’s worth a 45 minute flight from Oakland.

I will be there! It will be my first time having a table. I’m not US coin focused but I will be right near the front with a big selection of really neat Japanese coins. Stop by if you want to see something different! My table is #603 Rising Sun Rarities.

Yea sorry Tim, LB is a hike for me. Eventually i might try one out, but not this year. As pointed out by Abby, Noah is table 808. If you have anything you want to show me, give it to him and ask if he can send me a video of it.

Thanks Dan and @abbyme24. I’ll definitely stop and say hi to you and Noah. I’d like to see his ‘95 FH dollar and a couple of his HR Peace dollars.

@Joe_360 - from Gilroy, you should definitely consider the San Jose airport.

I hear that a lot of dealers are skipping the show and going to the Tampa instead. They say the show isn’t worth the trip. Any feedback about the show would be helpful.

I’ll be there Thursday. I have low expectations but it’s only a 45 minute drive for me.

    2. Why are they slabbing Cal Fractional Gold like this? Are they out of inserts or is this the new way going forward?

Probably the same knucklehead that holdered this Henry II penny the same way but using a gasket that was totally the wrong size. It's in the process of being fixed.

If you are anywhere close to SoCal, I would definitely recommend attending the show. This will be my first September show but I've really enjoyed the February and June Expos. The February show is probably the most vibrant but I found the June show well worth the visit. Yes, the September show is suffering a bit from ANA hangover and the new Tampa show but I don't think you would be disappointed.

Some might complain it has become a "Collectible's Show" as there is a wide range of exhibitors but the core group of numismatic dealers is enough to justify my travel from the Bay Area.

I had not planned to go, but got a big booth at the last minute (corner and inline tables). It was like a <10% odds I would drive up and roll the bourse for even just one day until yesterday. Select Rarities (831-835).

I'll be there walking the floor tomorrow (Wednesday) for Dealer Day and Thursday for Day 1. Will have some fun coins to offer for sale or trade while always on the hunt for my want lists.

I’ll be wondering the floor Thu/Fri. Love the LB show. I believe it’s been three years since I attended the last one. Too long!

Hey Phil. Sorry I’ll miss you but I’m consigning a very cool toned Mexican Mint set to GC on Thursday. Can’t wait to see how your Great Photos bring them to life.

As advertised, PCGS' Steve Feltner will be there from 10:30-12:30 on Thursday and Friday.

Well, I got in line today with the intention of asking Steve questions #2 and #3 (#1 has been beaten to death and I didn't want to get beaten for asking it). But after 15 - 20 minutes with 15 people in front of me and zero progress, I bailed. The sign said to limit each visit to five items or 10 minutes. I can tell you that rule was made to be broken.

    Sorry!

I can tell you that Steve is in support of adding more PL/DMPL designations as time goes on. At summer seminar, he told us how it’s an internal discussion but as far as he’s concerned if the coin merits the designation, it should receive the designation.

Have fun at the show. I'm flying into LA on Friday, but it's so I can help move my daughter from Pasadena to her post-academic life in Livermore. Not looking forward to the heat.

Justin stopped over to the show this morning. He did some pre-arranged business with Mr. Feld (through his reps) at Heritage that went “smooth as a whistle” (thank you again Mark!)

Justin got the sense that things were a bit slower there this morning than usual, but let’s hear from the dealers on the floor to verify that one.

Submitted coins to PCGS at their offices last week in connection with this show and already started receiving results back on the first couple of orders as early as Tuesday of this week (which was absolutely fabulous turnaround time by PCGS)! Made a big coin for a customer who thought he would hear about a result later this weekend. Instead he got the result on Tuesday, the true view of his coin was put online on Tuesday as well and yesterday the coin hit his registry set (before the show even opened)! Smooth operation! Bravo PCGS!

I'm not understanding the fractional gold slabbed like this. I have seen PCGS holders with very small struck fragment errors where the coin is suspended in thin plastic (like a flip) being held by a larger pronged insert. But the prongs were not touching the coin/fragment in any way.
