eBay Shill Bidding (?) Gone wild. 1953 GB Matte Proof Crown

This just closed. Seller has some “dubious” bidding on this and other lots incl matte proof 1953 3d, etc.
I counted at least 8 bidders bidding only on his auctions and most with zero bidding history.

Indeed. The price not so bad, IMHO the problem is shill bidding.

Looking at some of the bidders seems to support your point:

so both of the top 2 bidders were 'shills'?

if an auction is 'cancelled' (by seller) will it still show up in closed listings or does it disappear?

Wish I had the answer but am not an officiando of ebay policies. These coins had been for sale on his ebay store for up to 50k USD!

Was then relisted as a BIN and sold. Magic 8-ball indicates he took the $11,100 as an offer.

He shilled. Who cares. It's a high-grade PCGS piece... he knows approx. what it's worth, and so do any serious buyers. It's not a piece one can/should expect a fluke bargain on, no matter that he pushed it along with shill bidding. Presumably he took a shot that maybe a bidding war would kick it a bit higher.

Not the same as, say, a certain notorious self-holdering dealer out of Florida who's done it for years and years on highly iffy coins!!

Just the principle, as shilling is inherently dishonest. Good for him, I guess! Or not. Just be straight with it. To the best of my knowledge that type of auction is not looked well upon by ebay.

Auction houses have reserves - which would likely have been a better venue for him/her anyway. Shilling is dishonest and he obviously made efforts to disguise it, although still obvious. I would have bid, and am certainly a player, but that drove me away.

BTW, what is the "Magic 8-ball" as I am not familiar with that terminology?

Some of the known auction houses can and will bid on their own listings. Shady perhaps, but not dishonest.

@7Jaguars Magic 8 ball is a toy from the 50's, currently sold by Mattel. Have a good day. Peace Roy
