Love this 'first time offered'................I'll take this beauty over the Heritage 1870-CC Liberty Gold Double Eagle XF45 offered on August 14th any day of the week. Of course, I would need to borrow some funds. 😊

The single finest graded by PCGS. This coin was discovered in France in 2006 and purchased raw by our consignor, a centerpiece to his collection of rarities. It is not often a coin of this caliber can be defined as a fresh offering – but this is special – it is being offered at auction for the first time since it was minted 150+ years ago.

Interesting. With 17,387 minted and that one having surfaced from Europe one has to feel pretty confident that more won't be showing up to place a bid like that.

That is a boat load of money for a baggy coin.

The second toughest cc $20. Not a cac coin.

Baggy is part of its charm, explains why it is still UNC. CAC means very little (at least to me) at the top of the condition census for condition and absolute rarities. Yah that might not be worth much more than melt if a 1904, but it’s a hell of 71cc. They hold coins to an ideal preservation standard that often doesn’t apply to rarities that have simply Ben though too many opportunistic hands over the decades not to have been messed with and that is if they were a blessed survivor to begin with.

Not that I don’t see the charms on the AU53 that spent a little time in commercial channels before being put to the side and avoided bags most of its life. They both have stories to tell but the textbook 53 will have to compete with the processed AUs out there while the the 61 is the 61.

That should be a 60 in my opinion.

While I could see it in a 60 holder a small percentage of the time. The coin is mostly devoid of surface cleaving that happens when a bag mate gets ground against it almost like a super friction. You will see layers of the high points scraped like the cheek. That or disproportional hits in the focal areas. That coin is pretty much absent of both and knocked down for general bagginess to 61 as its base grade wasn’t that high with ho-hum luster and strike. 61 is a technically fair grade. Even if in general a baggy ho-hum commercial UNC double eagle is only a C+ coin by the standards of theoretical

Now is there a 58 out there that is superior in eye appeal with a higher base grade, less baggy but with some rub.
    Most likely

who knows what the 61 looks like in hand - it could have great or cruddy frost - are there piles of these pulled out of the European bank hordes?
