What is going on with this 1992 LMC?

I've taken the best possible pictures I can with my iPhone and a tripod. I have no idea what happened to the reverse, but I would love to hear your thoughts and opinions. I particularly love the "ghost" footstep-like markings heading up the memorial steps.

Thanks
Brad

Most of what you see is just the texture that often comes with the copper plating on cents.

The trail going up the steps looks like a series of die gouges to me. Basically, something hit the die, leaving incuse marks, which then left raised marks on the coins struck by that die.

Mechanical doubling, split plating, and that has always been an area of weakness as a lot of the metal in the planchet is used to form Lincoln's lower bust.

Looks like wheel marks on the reverse to me.
