Lots of good memories on the boards over 20+ years on CU. I remember the mod telling you to take it down, or was it a VP closer to Joe Orlando at the time? Anyway, the pic lives on and always will, I obviously know where to find it.

    Take care my friend.

@stevek, I just noticed that you are only 1500 posts away from 30k yourself. Time to get typing!!

In all fairness to Perkdog, when CU many years ago had the "Open Forum" which allowed discussion on virtually anything, I accumulated a lot of post count there. So on Sports Talk specifically, Perkdog is by far the king, and it's not even close.

If the Patriots do so poorly this season with no end in sight, and out of abject depression, Perkdog decides to join a Monetary for say five years to wear a loin cloth, take a vow of chastity, and properly grieve. If I happen to surpass his post count during that time, he will still be the king of Sports Talk in my view.

I just hope the Monks have the internet in Tibet, and Perkdog logs in and says Hi once in a while. 😉

They sent me an invite, but I didn't respond to it. At the time I was spending too much time as it was on internet forums, and wanted to cut down on the activity, not increase it,

The open forum pre dates me. I have heard quite a bit about it though. a few questions about it...

was it one particularly juicy topic or debate that got it canned, or was it death by a thousand cuts?

could you really talk about anything? religion/politics etc?

anyone remember when it was taken off line?

I sure wish there was a way to access it now, just to read. it sure sounded fun!

I do remember the open forum for like 5 minutes I skimmed through it but didn't really post much if anything, and it really was wide open from what I remember and politics and religion I think was ok, I might be wrong though.

I just started getting into the internet back when I started here in 2004, I never had a PC other than at my mother's which I could use sparingly, I think around 2007 I bought a laptop and started to enjoy the Internet, I still remember using the Boston Herald and USA Today for NFL stats to count fantasy football points when I joined PSA

    Good times 🍻

1000 cuts. Virtually all of the flagged posts came off of the Open Forum.

Nudity and porn type stuff was prohibited. Pretty much anything else was fair game.

2005 was the year that the hammer came down.

It was fun. Those with weak constitutions did not do so well.

If CU ever goes public this forum will wash away. They will have to moderate it properly or get rid of it entirely. Too much liability for a public company.

I may be wrong about this, but I think when CU removed the Open Forum, all the forum members posts from the Open Forum got smoked from their post history, although the post count wasn't affected.

So there's no way to access those past posts. Gone with the wind.

Then suddenly, I'd be in a discussion, may have been political or whatever, and the moderator (not Matt) was removing many of my posts. But wasn't touching some other's posts in the same threads opposing my viewpoints. So I said to myself, F* this chit, and stopped posting.

Matt eventually noticed that I stopped posting, and contacted me. So I did explain the reason. Matt said that person was no longer a moderator, and Matt basically stated that he hoped I came back. I thought about it because of how much I like Matt, but just didn't feel like returning at that point.

Section 230 doesn’t prevent that. It just states that CU isn’t liable for what members post on a forum they operate. I believe it would be “refreshed” because that’s what has been happening for the past few years in similar cases. When CU goes public again we can see what happens. Times may change but I don’t see this as an industry which benefits from accessory drama, like a social platform.

So yeah. Section 230 doesn’t control what companies might do with their social platforms in any way. It generally would allow them to keep it, but I don’t think they will.

I wasn’t going to respond to DB regarding CLCT because it is getting too far OT but since I responded to yours I’ll catch both. Since CLCT was taken private by Cohen & D1 times have changed.

Just my opinion though. The days of controversy sells generically are over though. For a company that wants to control the narrative on their process and product however - I can’t see the value.

Doesn't matter how much longer the forums continue. Any of us can get banned on a given day. Few years ago a friend wandered into the sports forum and got x'd in a heartbeat for being on the wrong thread at the wrong time. 7000 mostly quality posts and poofski.

@stevek, I just noticed that you are only 1500 posts away from 30k yourself. Time to get typing!!

remember when Nolan Ryan and Steve Carlton were battling it out for the all time strike out title? maybe you and perk are the new version!

    Ahhhh the Open Forum.

Guys could run a thousand posts on a weekend. It was the golden age of the internet.

I guess it was around 20 or 30 CU members, went and started their own forum when the Open Forum was closed. I can't recall the name of it.

They sent me an invite, but I didn't respond to it. At the time I was spending too much time as it was on internet forums, and wanted to cut down on the activity, not increase it,

The Card forum guys started their own forum awhile ago as well, it was when the new mod went on a rampage and started banning multiple people literally every week and cleared a lot of really good members out.

Matt ( Lawnmowerman ) and a few other legends put it together.

I remember when I was heavy into vintage football I put quite a few posts into the card forum so there is an asterisk next to my name with regards to Sports Talk posts.

When Matt started his forum, I of course immediately joined, as Matt is very well liked, including by me. I had around 500 posts there over a few months.

    Interesting,

I never knew he had a moderator over there but without question I would have been infuriated if I was you.

I posted a bit but just couldn't get into it

If I'm remembering right, Matt said he had two moderators, and I knew the one deleting my posts wasn't him because that moderator had a different forum name than Matt.

In any event, I wish Matt all the best and hope he's doing well.

If CU ever goes public this forum will wash away. They will have to moderate it properly or get rid of it entirely. Too much liability for a public company.

It was public up until a few years ago as CLCT.

Yes, up until 2/5/21. The forums help promote PSA and PCGS to some extent so I doubt going public, if and when that happens again (doubtful), would have any impact on the forums, though there's no question the message boards, as a platform, have fallen out of favor with advent of social media, especially on the trading card side.
