Joey Votto retires. first ballot HOFer?

craig44craig44 Posts: 11,200 ✭✭✭✭✭

Votto has retired. we have had discussions about him in the past. I hear quite a few people around the interwebs touting him as a sure fire first ballot HOFer. I am not convinced. I certainly dont think he is a first ballot guy.

If Carlos Delgado just languishes on the ballot for years, how can votto be a first ballot player? I will not take the time to post them here, but compare the two players stats. I know who I want playing 1b for my team and he actually played for the blue jays.

what do you think?

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

I never thought of him as a HOFer watching him play. I don’t think he has a shot at first ballot, and I think there are more deserving players who are off the ballot as you say. I do think he will be elected unless something changes - like he steps in something.

    I like Delgado better too.

Both very good hitters, I like a guy at 1st base who is more of a slugger.

BOTH are more deserving than some (most?) of the guys going in.

I feel like recency bias plays a big roll in all of this. the talking heads always tout the latest as the greatest, even though there are many players of yesterday who were just as good if not better.

Helton was a good example. I consider him a better player than Votto. but he languished on the ballot for years, and the talking heads are ready to anoint Votto as a first ballot guy.

Another one to add to the list of Votto comparables is Lance Berkman. He produced at the same level Votto did in fewer PA's. Berkman fell off the HOF ballot during his first year of eligibility getting only 5 votes. but Votto is looked at as a lock.

    wierd.

Votto's advantage was that he walked more, (and hit more singles). My opinion is that when talking about clean up type hitters who can't/don't run, walks are over valued.

Delgado had better "old man years" too, he had a season with 300 Total Bases at the age of 36. His final season he was still crushing the ball.

Vottos last 6 seasons were pretty bad.

@JoeBanzai I agree with everything you said there. it is true, Votto aged like milk.

Hes not a HOFer to me, but I think he will get in and get in pretty fast based on how well liked he is by the media.

I'll never understand the first ballot thing. Its one thing not to vote for someone if you run out of votes and think the other guys are more worthy, but the whole I know this guy is a HOFer but I wont vote for him for a couple years is just dumb

I would say yes to the HOF, not sure if he's first ballot, but he won't have to wait too long.
