1894 morgan question

COINS MAKE CENTSCOINS MAKE CENTS Posts: 1,821 ✭✭✭✭✭

Customer just sent me pictures of this morgan he wants to sell. I told him it's a middle vf details scratched grade. Would you agree that it's vf details?

Sounds about right, but it looks very strong as a vf. The scratch doesn’t look horrible in those pictures, how fresh is it?

The scratch isn't real bad, but it's there. It's got a even grey toning with a touch of color on the reverse.

A very ordinary VF with a scratch. Don't be generous with your offer if you make one.

    What makes you say details?

The scratch isn't that offensive, from what I can see at least, but would likely get you a details grade imo. What gives me pause however are what appear to be tiny marks in what would be the mintmark area on the reverse. Even in VF this coin is a fair chunk of change so if I'm the buyer my offer would be contingent upon authenticity assuming I couldn't determine that myself in hand. But I'd gamble the fees to send it in anyway.

Light scratches on Ms. Liberty's face and again on the neck... but I'm more concerned about an old cleaning that isn't very attractive now that it's toning back. The schmutz around the eagle's head on the reverse and into the periphery of the feathers...

If you could get it cheap enough, I might go for it... but those problems and the negative eye appeal give me pause...

Not bad for an album, neck scratch and old cleaning but retoning. If it wasn't details would be VF35.

That coin has unnatural surfaces, weird textured toning, and a strange stain.

i would bet it’s not a product of the US Mint at Philadelphia.
