Question about $5 AGE discocoration

I bought this coin many years ago and haven't really looked at it in at least 10 years. Today I was looking at it and it has some discoloration at about 5 o'clock. I know somebody with an XRF so if you think I should get it looked at I can. What would cause the discoloration?

Are you referring to the rim? Toning (change in color) on gold eagles is not common but does occur, especially when the coin is stored in or with something that can chemically react with the gold. Appears your coin is stored in a foam holder. I've seen a few discolored AGE's in PCGS slabs that I believe were "gassed" by the slab's paper label. Best way to store raw gold is in direct fit (with no foam adapter ring) airtite capsules.

Thanks! It's a $5 one, do they even make airtites for that? Will it get worse and does it hurt any resale value? Any others I have are graded and don't have that problem. I kind of thought the foam I got it in was good since it kept it from sliding around. I know less than nothing but trying to learn.

Note - I am NOT recommending that you buy these from APMEX. There could very well be cheaper sources. APMEX was just the first site that 'hit' when I searched for these.
AGE's are not pure gold and they are alloyed with copper which can tone. They are 22K or .9167 fine.

but they do contain the full amount of gold that they are denominated in, causing them to weigh more than what is stated on the coin.

You ae correct. A 1oz AGE will weight more than 1oz due to the alloy being added the 1oz of pure gold.

Thanks everybody! Can I get one of these Airtites at a coin shop? It's the only coin I have like it so I only need the one piece. Thanks for all your help!!
coin shops could have them, but i'd call first just in case
good luck with it

airtites of various sizes readily available on ebay. Stick with "direct fit," no foam rings.

Thanks for all your suggestions and ideas!
I'm kind of frustrated about this thing. Is it still worth melt? If it is, the guy I know with an XRF also buys gold, maybe I should just sell it.
Thanks again!
Of course it's still worth melt. I'm not sure a dip in e-Z-est or Tarnx would remove the discoloration or not but it wouldn't hurt to try it.

I'm really new at this. Just ordered a small e-z-est, No idea what to do to dip it, if I don't like how it turns out I can still sell it for melt, right?
coin is fine, still worth any other raw $5 AGE. Most people buy these because of the gold in them. Most don't care if it's toned a bit.
