Especially for anyone that wanted to quit...but didn't.

Your comment did catch my eye and I had a distinct flashback to 1967. I was in Officer Candidate School at Ft Benning, GA. I was there from June to November in the heat and humidity I cringe to recall. Needless to say, it was extrememly regimented, oftentimes having to do things that just weren't normal. Obviously all the things we had to do was to make life very uncomfortable for us to see if you could handle the stress of being in a combat environment. The pushups, pullups, square meals and running around the ariborne track every day was a challenge. Occasional chiggers, marching in the rain and hunger were not fun. I vividly recall running into the arm of a fire hydrant very early one morning while running to the PT field. I thought I'd fractured something. Everyone was supposed to put their hand out to alert the following runner, but not this time. Yes, I really thought of quitting, but toughed it out and graduated. Also spent a long year in the Nam, not pleasant memories. All in all, these experiences gave me a certain perspective on life that changed me for the better.
I haven't seen a French street crowd that jubilant since the Allies liberated Paris.
