Rank My Crack and Re-Sub Candidates

Have these 4 cards that I am considered cracking and sending to SGC.

In the case of Murray - seems to be a crap shoot for min-size but it's sharp card pulled from a rip so want to give SGC another chance.

Do you think I could get any bumps?

The Murray doesn’t look undersized, it looks more like the equivalent of a PSA N8 miscut due to the flare cut on the upper right edge. That is definitely the kind of thing that is somewhat subjective, so might be worth another try, although on this card it is pretty noticeable.

The Murray just looks weird. Flare-cut on both sides at the top. I wonder if SGC graded it ‘Authentic’ because they suspect it was sheet-cut. If they do grade it, centering meets criteria for an 8 but I think the top left corner keeps it from getting there.

The top left corner is the problem on the Henderson. My advice is keep it in the PSA 8 holder.

The 73 Ryan has T/B centering issues that max it out at a 7. And grading will depend largely on how harshly they look at the rough cut on the left edge. I think the corners on the left are consistent with the cut. But I don’t know I’d crack it to try to bump it to a 7.

Both PSA and SGC grade 75s a LOT more harshly than they used to. They started really hammering even minor chipping. Lower left and upper right look a touch soft and the colors don’t really pop like they should. But. . .I’m guessing they found a small surface wrinkle somewhere that’s keeping it from a 7.

I’d crack the Ryan’s. I wouldn’t touch the Henderson, I think the 8 is generous (from here perhaps would change my mind having it in hand)

  • Personally, I would steer very far from cracking any of these. I get why people do it and there are times when it was the right call. I think PSA sees cards in a Beckett holder and downgrades. I had a BGS 9 that I was hoping to transfer to PSA 9. Grade was minimum size not met. If I crack its a panic attempting to get it back in the BGS 9 holder. New person may see it different. Then just watched BGS look at a couple of PSA 10 cards, not my own, where someone else's hope was Pristine and they said BGS 9.

So at times I think its better to not have the holder influence the reviewer. But so far SGC has not been like that in my opinion. They seem comfortable looking at a PSA holder and saying we disagree, sometimes by a lot. That could change soon and we may be looking at new bosses leaning on them and expressing certain read between the lines messages and All Hands meeting where the vision is clarified. If so, we may all want to hurry.

I would leave them in the holder and just send with a minimum grade you hope to receive. It depends on how much you mind losing the money if no upgrades. I would think maybe worth $60 for a dice roll. But I probably write off the Eddie as others have suggested. 73 Ryan probably not but who knows, maybe a 7. Maybe worth $15 to learn yes or no. The 75 Ryan I dont think would look strange in an SGC 7 holder. Henderson I think its worth $15 to try to get an 8.5. Probably not with some right edge chipping and print dots but worth a try at that cost. Centering nice.

I did a similar move, leaving everything in the holders, and mailed off Wednesday. Should hear back in the next 10 days or so. Can report back on results.

I think the cards are appropriately holdered.. of course you can try the Murray again or better yet send it in for a private signing.

‘75 Ryan is the only one I think has a chance to grade higher.

I think PSA got those right.
The '75 Ryan looks to have surface issues.

I agree that all look to be correct grade wise. The upper right corner of Murray flares out, the Henderson looks really clean but I don’t think it would bump but it is possible. 73 Ryan probably won’t bump to the top to bottom, centering and corners, and I own several 75 Ryan’s in a six that have sharper corners and edges so I don’t think that one will bump but it is a nice card. Good luck!

Only crack if trying to go from SGC to PSA. You missed the SGC boat, it sailed away when PSA bought them.

i have a 77 Brett that came from a vending that PSA will not grade that has a similar top edge. They've sent it back twice as Miscut, and has the same rolled edge on the top side.

I'll keep trying because it's in great condition otherwise.

Please do. The results will be interesting.

  • So my latest submit PSA cards to SGC project is now complete. Pics are of the cards submitted, 2 Hendersons PSA 8, Unitas PSA 7, both Jordan Loves PSA 9, 85 Mattingly PSA 9, 4 84 Nestle Mattinglys PSA 8 (two of which have blazing fisheye headlights on the back but have a PSA 9 with that as well), Tage Thompson PSA 9. All except the Nestle Mattinglys I was willing to accept a half grade bump. Those I set minimum grade of 9. Some bumped. Some did not. Feel free to speculate and pontificate and I can share the results.

In general is the FMV of a SGC 9 greater than new slab PSA 8 ?

so let's take a 1975 topps nolan ryan -- SGC 9 VS psa 8. THe psa 8's go for around $500 - $550. IF the SGC is pretty centered, I would assume it would go for $2,000 - $3,000 range.

I would think the SGC 9 would be the best bet practically everytime. Now SGC 8.5 vs psa 8 will be much closer if not the same depending on the look of the card. In fact a PSA 8 might be higher in some cases.

Work hard and you will succeed!!

Thanks but unfortunately no. That was the one I was hoping for most. Always felt it was a nice 7 and for now it will stay that.

  • So the ones that bumped were the two Loves and Thompson. But only to 9.5 Mint+. Kind of cool because it could have been nothing. But also kind of break even waste of time.

And its annoying because I think the PSA influence is already there and I hate that. Loved them as two separate companies that were incredibly different. Loved the SGC salespitch of pick us cause we are not like them and this is how. I can read between the lines on this order and it just so feels like a memo or a meeting or a message from downtown.

At the end of the day its oh PSA gave these cards these grades and we know PSA couldn't have got it wrong. No, PSA gets it right so no bumps. But hey where PSA could not have possible given you a higher grade, Mint+, a grade they dont have, sure.

Not one card in 11 where they would say PSA was not right originally. Think the crossover game with me and them has ended unless its just like that. Them not having to acknowledge they disagree with PSA, Dad looking over their shoulder.
