1864 2 Cent Die Clash?

Hi Everyone,
I am very new at collecting coins, and I came across this 1864 2 Cent coin that looks like it might have a die clash error. I have attached pictures of this coin. Could anyone tell me what this might be?

Welcome to the forum, unfortunately your coin is just damaged. Someone pounded another coin into it.

  • Ok, as I said, I'm new! Would you mind telling me what you see that would lead you to that conclusion?

Sure, there is flattening on the reverse of the coin from the damage on the obverse, also a die clash will show more on the fields of the coin, not the devices because the fields are the high points on the die so they receive more damage from the clash, this coin has more damage on the high points. A clash is from the dies coming together without a planchet between them, so it would be impossible for the dies to have been so misaligned to cause the clashing to be so off center.

  • Ok, interesting! Thank you for your help!
