Cracked ANACS & NGC Morgans and submitted to PCGS results

I see posts with varying answers as to people's results and wanted to share my latest 8 coin crack and submit results...

I think I did pretty well. All of these coins were purchased well below PCGS equivalent grade prices with room to submit and still be below what those coins would have been had I bought them in PCGS slabs... Most were purchased -1 to -2 grade prices.

1880/79-S' were a bit disappointing. One coin downgraded to 62 but looks 63 to me and the 2nd went from 64PL to 63. It was purchased knowing that the PL was a stretch but the coin looked good for the numeric grade...

Some you loose and some we win.

i did pick out coins that were pleasing with minimal distractions for the grade.

Those are pretty consistent crossovers! Actually impressive, to me anyway, that you had 75% grade the same or better, when you consider that you sent them in raw. I sent in three Morgans (two ANACS and one NGC) to PCGS in their original holders. The ANACS crossed even and the NGC dropped a grade.

The part that I’m happy about is PCGS getting all the VAM’s correct. I’ve seen some YouTube videos where they were not attributed.

Well done, great to see your results.

3 crossed at grade and 3 upgrades thats pretty good. One was a 2 point upgrade from A60 to P62. That's gotta make you happy.

  • When you sent them raw to PCGS, did you note the VAM, etc. for each Coin or did they do it on their own without prompting from you?

I marked them for Variety Attribution but did not note anything special.

I am thrilled. I've had PCGS flat deny crossing some coins so this was a good submission.

@Samets I find cracking them out tends to yield better results than trying to cross in the holder. Its not supposed to be that way, but somehow I feel like it is

Edited to add- as long as you crack them out without damaging the coin.

I agree completely. This is the reason I started to crack them out. I seem to have better results.

Crossovers are tricky conversations. Coins like the seated quarters you sort of have to buy the best you can find and hope for upgrades as they present. The numerical grade is more about pricing to gauge the opportunity cost and then plastic preferences. Even an expert numismatist will prioritize original surfaces and preservation against the price versus how other they had seem them in the wild to see if they squeeze the trigger.

Coins like Morgan’s, being saved in quantity, can be found across the spectrum with price compression in most grades and a seasoned coin guy can apply their standards (or PCGS’s ect) irrespective of the brand of holder they currently sit in and expect consistent cross over results. Some guys almost never miss when factoring in a couple of redundant submissions.

Good submission, and thanks for documenting this. It is very educational.

    Great results.

If you can, keep the photo of the old labels for your records, and then return the original labels to ANACS/NGC to get their population reports updated.

As David Hall used to say 80% of the top graders are in agreement on grading.

Can't complain about that. That's also quite a compliment to your ability to select nice coins.

I do but also need a base to work with. Try finding comps for a 1892 Morgan in PCGS MS60 that are recent...

I think they do OK on colorless MS silver.
