Is this card beautiful or what?

You know how some cards just strike you simply as a "work of art"? Well, I was enjoying my collection today, just browsing through everthing and I came across this card that I have in PSA 6. The face of mine is beautiful, but it deserved the 6 grade. Nevertheless, the darn card - the 1957 Topps Roberto Clemente - is probably my all-time favorite in terms of visual appeal. Thought I would share that and see if you have cards where you feel the same way. Anyway, here is an example of the card I am referring to:

    1965 CLETE BOYER
UNI- Here's a card that I always liked. I had this as a kid, I was 6 when it came out, so I probably had it a year or 2 later via flipping or from one of my brothers. I recently picked this up in a PSA-8 to add to my '65 set. When I opened the padded envelope, I just kept staring and admiring the card. To me its a perfect card, Boyer has the Yankee cap on (I hate those '62's that shows the players large heads w/ no Baseball caps), you see him swinging the bat without use of batting gloves wearing the home pinstripes uniform, a nice blue sky that highlights the colorful magenta red border, and the yellow Yankees pennant waving on the bottom of the card. Beautiful card. I'm too lazy to scan my '65 PSA-8 so I found a raw one on eBay for you to see, hope you like it too!...jay

    Enough new stuff.

I do like the Clemente though, I think it's his best card.

One of my favorites. Not a big Bench/Reds fan, but this card has always struck me as a work of art.

  • This topic interests me a great deal because I am attempting to determine my favorite cards of each player for my HOF set that I am very slowly working on. I thought about asking a question on the board, on a week by week basis, to see what others felt were great cards of each player, but I thought others may get tired of it after 10 or 20 weeks of it.

I've always liked Clemente's '71 Topps card. I think it is a great picture and very representative of the player, especially with his passing at a very early age and the black borders. I also love the '76 Topps card of Bench. Looks like he has been through battle in that photo. And for Bruce, I absolutely love the T206 Hughie Jennings Both Hands card and the Walter Johnson Portrait.

Speaking of Bench..his 69 Topps is one of my all-time favorites.
Who let this kid in the ballpark?

  • How about the 1953 Bowman Color Pee Wee Reese? Does it get your vote as one of the top 5 most beautiful cards of all time?

  • Great Thread Uniship. 1953 Bowman Reese is a great card however my all-time favorite is below
    1951 Bowman Ted Williams

The Classic Splendid Splinter swing the grand stands in the background and blue sky with a few white clouds .... Awesome!

  • While the 1985 Topps Hulk Hogan is a work of art in my book image, I chose to select my favorite card, which always garners a second look from me at card shows:

Thanks to hbcards@msn.com for letting me steal his scan off eBay for the discussion image.
  • I dont know if you guys have mentioned it yet.........but Roger Maris '61 Topps has to be one of the most eye appealing cards out there, and one of the most revealing (something about the eyes)...Although I am partial to my 1950 Bowman's, a literal work of "art" in each card.......

The 5 greatest looking cards of all time (and I wish I had them) are
    5- T206 Mathewson Black Cap
    4- 1953 Bowman Color Reese
    3- 1934 Goudey Gehrig
    2- 1950 Bowman Ted Williams
    - and Number ONE
The 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle - Blue sky, looking up, awe inspiring! These 1952 Topps (except Snider) are generally boring ... ironic that Mantle is the best one and the epitome of the hobby

  • Great list 1420sports. Here's my top 5:

    1) 53 Bowman Color Reese
    2) 56 Topps Ted Williams
considering how I generally dislike horizontal cards, it's ironic that my top 2 choices are horizontal cards
    3) Most of the 64 Topps Giants cards (Torre, the Robinsons, Mays, Yaz, Gibson...)
    4) 57 Topps Ted Kluzewski
    5) 53 Bowman Color Bob Feller and Phil Rizzuto (tie)

On a more personal question, but similar subject regarding the best looking card for my favorite player Pete Rose. Between 1963 and 69 Topps, which Rose card in your opinion is the best looking one?

Why is it, that when talking about an aestically nice looking card, everyone chooses a star card. Didn't Don Dillard or Del Crandall have any nice looking cards?...jay
  • I think that's because it's easier to remember the star cards. You see it more often, at shows and on ebay. I think all the 53 Bowman Color is awesome, as are most 56 Topps (in my opinion). But when it comes to naming a good looking card, it's much easier to first think of cards that you know off the top of your head (star players), then work your way down to which of those cards look the best. That's why I put the entire 64 Topps Giants set on my list, even though some are nicer than others, there are just too many good ones in that set.

I wanted to put Pete Rose on my list, he has some nice cards, but none of them captured me as much as the ones I listed.

NGFRED - ditto on Rose as he is my favorite player too. His nest card from 63 to 69 is a tie ... 65 and 68 Topps Game. I almost have his entire run in 8 or higher - looking for the rookie (has to be a hi-end 8 and 71 - same thing) ... 66 is a close second

  • This is probably my favorite baseball card~
  • That 66 topps Aaron is a very nice card I must admit. On the topic of common cards, I do have a favorite, 1950 Bowman #251 John Lester Moss. The deep blue background and great framing make this card a piece of art.

Those cards grow on you, but my own favorite 50B is actually a football card:

Good luck finding Parnell. I don't believe that I have ever seen a 7 on eBay. I got my 7 by buying a complete set with intent to sell everything except the Parnell.

  • While the '66 Topps is a great card of Aaron, my favorite has to be the '67 Topps.

As far as non-superstar cards, I've always liked the '53 Bowman Color Al Rosen card.

Bruce, that Tank Younger card is gorgeous.

  • Great set carew. I think that 55 B FB set gives the 72 Topps FB set a run for the money in terms of being the best looking football set.

1420sports - I agree with the 65 and 66 Topps of Rose being on the top of the 60's list. I haven't had a chance to check out the 68 Game. I would rank the 66 Topps just ahead of the 65. For some reason, the bottom of the 65 Topps doesn't seem as natural to me. The stripe at the top of the 66 is not my favorite design neither, but it seems to grow on me more so than the 65.
    Fred
  • Bruce, great looking '50 Bowman. That football set is undervalued by my estimation. I can always dream about the Parnell, I figure the only way I am getting one is by a another company or a raw card, then I will have to try my luck with the PSA graders.....I know you want to sell your Parnell to me......look into my eyes.........you are getting sleepy.....
