Advice on Estate sale find

It's been years since I visited the boards. So, hello again to everyone. I still see some familiar faces here.

After years of not actively collecting, I stumbled upon an issue of Life magazine from April 13, 1962, at an estate sale today. The magazine features the Mantle and Maris Post cereal cards that are still attached inside. The magazine itself is in poor -fair shape, with the cover almost completely detached. Despite this, the Mantle and Maris cards inside are still in nice condition. I'm considering whether it's best to detach the cards, get them graded, or leave them untouched within the magazine. Since I'm no longer actively collecting, I want to determine the option that would yield the highest resale value. Any advice appreciated.

Leave it. It has water damage and would grade maybe Auth o 3 at best. Keep whole

  • I wonder if anyone actually tried to incubate chickens with the frypan. :o

    Gobble.

I happened to come across the estate sale just across the street from where I live and found that the owner had a large collection of Life magazines. Luckily, I remembered the cover of this particular issue and recalled that it contained the cards. I was initially just searching for interesting Life magazine covers to decorate a side table at home, but I never expected to find actual cards inside. I paid $3 for the magazine. Additionally, I purchased some classic rock vinyl albums from the 70s for $10 each.

I carefully removed the panel from the magazine because it was damp and had a moldy smell, which could have caused further damage to the cards. After separating them, I found the cards to be free of water damage, but there was some rust near the staples that had spread to the perforation, but not onto the panel itself.

I think this was probably best as the magazine was in poor shape and would most likely only further deteriorate the cards (although they are in surprisingly good shape).

Here they are now in panel form, maybe a little O/C, but otherwise nice.

I took it out of the magazine cause the magazine was roached. I kept the panel intact.
