State of Ohio Legislature attempts to ban artificial turf for pro sports.

MaywoodMaywood Posts: 2,087 ✭✭✭✭✭

A bipartisan bill introduced to the Ohio House would require that Ohio professional sports teams play their games on natural grass instead of artificial turf, a mandate that singles out the artificial turf field that was recently installed at the Cincinnati Bengals' Paycor Stadium.

At just two pages long, House Bill 605 simply states that Ohio teams within the National Football League, Major League Baseball and Major League Soccer must host all preseason, regular season and postseason games on natural turf.

The Ohio House representatives behind it — along with the National Football League Players Association, which tacked on its support after finding that 93% of NFL players prefer grass fields — see artificial turf as a workplace safety issue and hope to make Ohio the first state in the country to regulate professional playing surfaces.

The key word in the news article is "bipartisan" although there's no mention of who the sponsor(s) were. In current times it is indeed ironic that Sports, in particular football, can be a force to unite people. In Ohio, the other force that unites us is Interstate 71, starting in Cleveland and running diagonally through Columbus and THE Ohio State Buckeyes down to Cincinnati and the home of the Bengals!!

It will be interesting to see how this works out and if it has an affect on what seems like a growing move to replace all turf. Down in Arizona they proved it is feasible, now the trick is to pry money away from some billionaires and get them to worry about the health and safety of the players. B)

I cannot wait for the inevitable cry from the billionaire owners "if this bill passes, we will have to investigate moving our franchise to a state that values the positive impact from an NFL team".

I don't think it is a coincidence this is happening with the lease set to expire in 2026. The city willing to invest $300 million into the facility (a ridiculous total) and the team only wanting to extend for 5 years?

If the owner of the team can't or won't invest the money necessary, the league should have rules in place to force a sale. The hostage-taking that is allowed to occur from these billionaires threatening to leave town if they don't get their way is no different than a child crying about not getting a toy.

Turf should be banned everywhere especially in pro and college sports. Its not that much of a money saver and it has significantly higher rates of non contact injuries, ankle injuries, knee injuries, and has even been linked to increases in leukemia when the pellets get into cuts exposing them to the blood stream. Its like playing on cement with a rug on top of it. I will never understand the logic of paying a QB 40 million a year but having turf put their health in greater danger than it has to be to save a million dollars or less a year

Painesville Riverside High School, located about 10 miles from me, has artificial turf. So turf usage isn't limited to the NFL and NCAA. The field is beautiful but I wonder what it's like being a 15-16 year old young man being tackled on that surface??!!?? My thoughts are that the NFL needs to grow a pair and just get onboard with the NFLPA and set some mandate that nothing new gets built unless it has grass, no turf. Then they can work towards eliminating the turf fields that remain.

I doubt this will go smoothly and I wonder if it'll end up being a ballot issue. I would vote in the affirmative.

Common sense, it seems, would dictate that any ideas limiting/reducing injuries to the owners massive human investments would be adopted without much delay.

Could it be because the owners purchase injury insurance on the players contracts?

If i am not mistaken, there's at least two baseball stadiums (one in Florida, one in Canada?) that don't even have a real warning track, just a different color turf. Same material. Not much of a warning.

One would also wonder why all the outfield walls aren't padded.

I think Mickey Mantle got severely injured in 1964 because they had a chain link fence in the outfield (Baltimore?) and he ran into it. A chain link fence OMFG!

I could never understand why the owners didn't insist on safer conditions for their players. Now the public is funding most if not all the stadiums. Safety should be required before we build a facility that's dangerous.

They had such horrible turf in the Metrodome in Minnesota, Billy Sims tore up his knee and ended his career.

The players associations haven't done enough to force the issue. Some basic rules should be in place. Common sense isn't that common I guess.

The baseball stadiums get me fired up a lot. Changing turf color isnt a warning track and the full turf fields in MLB and college are an embarrassment. Infield grass being turf alright, base paths, the mounds, warning tracks I very much dislike seeing that

I think many high school sports play on artificial turf.

There's only reason why turf is chosen:

it's cheaper, usually at least 50% cheaper. If it were somewhat close in costs, no one would choose artificial turf.

It's not a better product, it's not even marginally close.

The only environment that I preferred turf to play on was indoor soccer. The turf at the Bradley Center when I played there in Milwaukee wasn't all that bad. There was one gruesome injury that I witnessed - knee dislocation. Gotta be very careful with your plant angle on turf - it was heavily coached.

The had a once a year baseball card show at the Metrodome called "TwinsFest". The dealer tables were set up on the playing field.

I absolutely can't believe the play football on a surface this hard.

About like indoor/outdoor carpet on top of concrete.

My daughters school just changed to turf . I think they are looking forward to playing on it. They play soccer in winter season and that is our rainy season.Wet grass and mud.

Theyll change their minds quick. It sounds great but its not. HS there is a financial argument or like a public park, but big time college programs and pros theres no excuse to have it
