    How was the show?

  • From a dealer's perspective, I posted the following in another venue:

While much smaller than the excellent GCJJ coin show in November, the Tallahassee Numismatic Club held a coin show at the Tallahassee Senior Center on August 24. I was one of several dealers (none of whom was at the Jacksonville show) who set up a booth and enjoyed a surprisingly decent day, both buying and selling.

By comparison to Jacksonville, the Tallahassee area has some work to do with regards to growing awareness of the hobby. Not only is the population much smaller than Jacksonville’s within the surrounding area, but this happened to be the Saturday that the Florida State Seminoles competed in Ireland (and lost), and that drew some of the crowd away since it was a noon kickoff local time. Nevertheless, I was able to purchase over the table the following:

    • 39 silver dollars in low enough grade as to be worth little over bullion
    • two 1903 silver d0llars in at least AU-55
    • a 1921 Peace dollar that barely makes EF-40
    • four “cheap slab” modern coins certified by PCGS
    • an 1847 large-cent that grades AU or better
    • a total of $42.55 in 90% silver, including a dateless half-dime
    • an 1824/3 dime in PCGS F-12
    • 2016 Coin and Chronicles Set featuring Ronald Reagan
    • 1945 Walking Liberty half-dollar in an old ANACS holder labeled “GENUINE / RESIDUE”
    • two series 1966 hundred dollar bills in CU condition
    • numerous other type coins worth up to a dollar or so apiece

In terms of sales, here is a partial list of coins that found new owners:

    • 1937, 1937-d and 1937-S nickels in AU/UNC for a collector needing that birth year
    • Roman Empire 307-308 AD AR follis in ICG VF-35
    • 1806 Browning-9 Draped Bust quarter in Fine
    • 1833 Overton-101 Bust half-dollar in EF-45
    • 1862 $3 New Orleans obsolete, PMG VG-10
    • four GSA dollars that I graded MS-62
    • gem 1965 Jefferson nickel with a nice planchet clip
    • 1922-S Peace dollar, PCGS MS-62
    • 1891-S Morgan dollar, NGC AU-58
    • HK-302, a 1904 So-Called Dollar - Louisiana Exposition, very-fine
    • 1858 Flying Eagle cent, small letters that I graded EF-40
