Sounds to me like they are trying to slow the game down. I have not seen any of the pre-season games yet to really make a judgement.

I like it other than the onside kick part of it where they have to be behind in the 4th quarter and let the other team know its coming. Its basically the same kick off rule the XFL was using which is designed to force kickoff returns instead of just wasting everyones time watching kickers blast the ball out of the endzone every time
Wisconsin 2-6 against the SEC since 2007
Was at the Cotton Bowl December of 1969.
Cowboys vs the Redskins*
Landry vs Lombardi
Different and better game then. Rules were simple, now you need a pamphlet just to describe the overtime rules.
*Commanders, yeesh.
Does anybody like that new rule on football kickoffs ?
I'm Not Sure yet... Kinda Undecided...
Just like anything else - will have to get used to it after actually watching it a few times.
"When they can't find anything wrong with you, they create it!"
I prefer seeing fewer touchbacks. Can players give themselves up to stop the clock?
Actually seeing a guy return a kick will be an anomaly pretty soon lol
The speed of these guys is so high they want to limit the collisions
Collisions are what football is all about.
It is what makes football exciting to watch.
Keep changing the rules and you will have tag football in front of an empty stadium.
People show up for games because of the excitement.
No excitement then no people.
In other news, the NFL has announced for the 2025 season that they will be going to a two hand touch format.
To prevent errors by the refs as to whether a two hand touch was actually made or not, defensive players will wear "special gloves" containing computerized chips, that will indicate when both hands were on the ball carrier at the same time.
A loud buzzer noise will be played throughout the stadium when a proper touch is made, so the fans will know when to cheer or not.
The NFL commissioner applauded the decision as a step in the right direction to enhance player safety. He also announced that they were looking into plans for the 2026 season to ban blocking to make the game even safer.
And that the National Anthem will no longer be played before the games. Instead the song will be, "Mary had a Little Lamb."
That is EXACTLY what I was talking about . The game is being micro managed and I will no longer be buying the NFL package as it is being striped of excitement by a bunch of pussies.
Only crumpets and tea will be served at the stadiums.
Although on special holidays, the menu may include vanilla ice cream.
Waa, I wanted strawberry !
I know a lot of people didnt watch the XFL, but the rule actually does force kicks to be returned instead of just having touch backs every time. I dont like the onside kick part of the rule, but its better than just seeing guys fair catch every kick off or the ball going out of the back of the endzone every time

Football is becoming very boring!
We all will have to live with it.
I will not watch much football anymore. Used to go to all the Patriots games when I lived in Mass and have not been to one since I moved Albuquerque. I had the NFL package here until a couple of years ago when the prices went up. Its not the kind of game anymore so it really doesn't interest me.
That’s how it’s been explained to me as well. One of the guys I’m traveling with was a former radio personality for ESPN and he explained it in a similar way, as you have, a couple nights ago. The intent is to have fewer touchbacks. I’m curious what reason and knowledge some of the comments equating this to flag football are based in.
Hank Stram Superbowl IV...
Kick it up high Jan...No frozen ropes...
I'm not trying to fool anyone
I'm going to continue to watch, it's my favorite sport by far
Who is the Einstein that thought off this New Kickoff Gig ???
It's all about the money guys ! The owners do not care about the game the players or the fans as long as the money keeps rolling in. I think with the new rule fans will be bored silly as there will be no action.
Grouchiness 😆
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
Theres going to be a lot more action at least for that rule. The onside part isnt great but kicks have to actually be returned now
Wisconsin 2-6 against the SEC since 2007
say like the kicker kicks a squib kick that hits the helmet of a player on the kick receiving team and the football ricochets 11 yards forward on an angle off his helmet and the football lands out of bounds...
What's the call ???
I just signed up for an intense ten week night school accredited course for understanding the new NFL rules.
As a special bonus, included with the course are lessons about the new MLB pitching and proposed computer generated strike zone rules.
Belichick got asked about the new kickoff rule and sounds like he's not a fan.
That segment starts at 11:50

Ball either on the 40 because it didn’t make it to the landing zone or maybe placed where it went OOB… not sure.
Jim
i see a lot of kicks going into the end zone
I see a lot of teams trying to land balls in the receiving area that go into the end-zone. It might not seem like a big difference, but starting at the 30 gives you a 10% advantage in scoring points on a drive relative to starting on the 20.
They have put so many new rules into the game in the last 10 years that it has ruined the game for me. I hope all the fans enjoy the games this year but I will not be one of you. Maybe I will start watching hockey again where there is more action.
Football has had some pretty arcane formation rules as long as I've watched the games, so this is just par for the course...
I'm not a fan that you have to notify of an onside kick attempt, but I get why it has to be done with the changes. I've already re-taught my kids what a catch is so hopefully that doesn't change. The other day I grabbed some mustard and it clipped the edge of the door and I dropped it... but I didn't make a condiment move so it didn't count.... my son picked it up and ran it to the table for the score.
With player safety in mind I find it interesting. So far we’ve seen vanilla returns. I’m sure there will be a lot more returns in the works for the regular season. Should be fun to watch
