How can eBay justify the cost of Authentication on items like this?

I won this card on 7/6/24. $ 34.00 plus $ 4.19 shipping.

The card gets sent off to eBay Authenticity! at their expense - I have NO idea why...under $250 and BCCG graded!
Card arrived to me today! Just FOUR weeks later! Crazy way to run a railroad.

Did the auction have a BIN at $250 or more or was it just an auction?
I see some weird ones where it should go for auth and it doesn’t and some where it shouldn’t and it does.
I’m also curious what they said as I wasn’t aware they authenticated BCCG slabs. So did they verify the card from inside the slab? It’s a little weird.
The authentication program seems to change on a weekly (daily) basis.
Ebay must have decided it saves them money in the long run.
I don’t know if this is fact or not but I’m hearing the “free” authentication is going to end. Authentication isn’t going to end but look for a charge
Authentication should be optional!
You shouldn't have to spend $250.00. Anything over $50 or $100 should be given the option.
If you refuse, you give up any future claim.
If you're a new collector or just want an added inspection on your card, that's fine. A minimal charge could be added.
It doesn't make much sense to have PSA reexamine their own slabs, unless there's evidence of tampering.
I wonder how many of the previously graded cards get rejected?
CGC inspects the raw cards? I looked them up. They've been around for 20-40 years(?), but mostly graded comic books. When did they start grading cards?
I tried contacting ebay about this, the "assistant" was of no assistance.
Waiting for a return call now
What about when you purchase a PSA Mickey Mantle, but get sent a Mickey Worthless... it's not just authentication... It's like monitored escrow.
Since the early pandemic
I just got off the phone with Alejandro at ebay customer service;
If you get a raw card that was judged authentic by ebay (CGC), and then send it to PSA for grading and it fails authenticity, you need to find out within the 30 day return period in order to return the card for a refund.
There is no appeal process. If you get a card that you don't think is authentic, you better return it or hope you can get it to PSA and back quickly.
There is NO 30 day return window unless the seller states one, and most listings are no returns...
IF I understood the ebay customer service guy correctly (admittedly a big if) ebay would make you whole IF you could prove a card that passed their "authentication" was indeed, not authentic.
I'm not even sure you could prove it if you got the card back from PSA in time.
Guarantee;
In most cases, you are going to be fine. But if you buy a big $ raw card, their "guarantee" means nothing if you send it in and it's not authentic.
