My latest purchase is an upgrade to my set. It represents a rarer die pairing, has great eye appeal, and is as undoubtedly original as possible. A Louisiana half dollar.

Very nice! GFRC auction?
Really strong eye appeal! Nice example of a 61-O.

Great look! Your 1860-O is not too shabby either!
You should provide a link to your registry set - I go through it on occasion and always enjoy it.

It is great that you enjoy the set. Thanks for the fandom.
Callouts to @elmerfusterpuck as the half dollars posted on the forum from his collection provided inspiration and @crusty for his inspiration and help related to the 1878-S key date.
Your set has excellent looking coins and some tough dates. One can certainly see the dedication to the O mints. Your 1853-O….ohh so nice. I recall your 1888 from a thread you posted. The 1848-O looks very nice, too.
My collecting these half dollars started in 2012 and has been very fun and rewarding.
Yes from the recent auction. Almost a third of my collection has been from GFRC. His ‘gem’ designator for originality has never disappointed.
Excellent to hear from you.

A spectacular coin with a very good strike. Congratulations @JBN! I'm sure that will be a desktop 'distraction' for a while.
I am a fan of that young lady
Thanks for the shoutout! I'm still working on on that set. Here's the 1861-O I got at a Long Beach show ages ago. Hoping to find maybe some more hole fillers at the ANA show coming up! That coin is graded AU-58.

Wow 1861. How much would that be worth at auction?
In recent years, 50c 1861-O AU58 PCGS coins have sold for $1000-$1500,
although one of a particular die variety sold for $14,400.

That is awesome @yosclimber - Worth while investing in a metal detector? Plenty of beaches and old ruins 200 plus years old near where I live.
Metal detecting can be fun, but it's unlikely you'll find an AU58, due to environmental oxidation of silver.
You might find an AG3 or G4.
I think of metal detecting as a hobby done for fun.
Not as an investment where you are hoping for a return.
She's a beauty!
