Copper.. copper.. copper.. copper.. copper chameleon...
I've been low key finishing off a few holes in a Wayte Raymond album of Large Cents. Im usually pretty good at spotting cleaned copper with raw coin in hand. That said, I find the color of a copper coin as seen in the image of an auction can differ dramatically depending on "the tilt" of the coin and lighting. What appears to be an appealing medium brown takes on that "metallic sheen" when tilted ever so slightly... a bit aggravating, but at least it's not princely sums of money...
I'll try to post pictures later but I just got an 1855 Knob on Ear that didn't look bad... only to find altered surfaces... coin looks to have been burnished or polished and damn near every color of the rainbow if the light hits it just right... :-/
Sorry for the rant...

Here’s one I bought a long time ago from one of the major EAC dealers. It bagged at both services for cleaned/altered surfaces.
I couldn’t capture all the glossy colors with the photo, but you get the idea:
I thought this was going to be about Boy George (Washington) coppers?
This!! Exactly... I'd have bought it in a heartbeat based on the first image... the second one (with the iridescent sheen) not so much... still a nice details coin though.

I would like Greg's 35 in my album, and tilt it in the album so it looks like the 1st photo. lol
