Hello Everyone,
It's been a long time since I have been on this site, and hope I'm doing this right. I'm wondering if someone could tell me about an 1980 Quarter I found which the edges look silver and the weight is 5.70 grams. I'm trying to understand how the weight works. My question is.. Is this coin considered 40% silver? I just don't get it, I also have a 1971 D Kennedy Half which weighs 11.45 grams is this considered 40% silver as well? Also the 1977 Kennedy Half which is dark brown and weighs 9.0 grams is this Clad?
Thank you

No. The weight is normal for a copper-nickel clad quarter, so If the edges look silver, the coin was silver-plated post Mint.
Not likely. You probably have a normal copper-nickel clad half dollar struck on slightly rolled thick stock, or just a poorly calibrated scale.
Yes. The missing clad layers and the reduction in weight could be the result of a Mint error, but more likely, the coin was acid-treated post Mint.
