Gretzky Rookie - Opinions?

Danny1234Danny1234 Posts: 8

Father in law took some pictures of his Gretzky rookie card and sent them to me. I knew he had one but I didn't realize it was in this good of shape.

He's terrified of sending it away to get graded. I know the imaging is a bit blurry, he's got a pretty bad camera and these were the best photos I could pick out the numerous ones he sent me haha.

What is everyone's opinion on this? I've sent numerous cards away that were in worse shape than this one and they've gotten PSA 7's.

One thing I will mention, the small black mark along the white border on the bottom right of the card is not actually on the card. Was on his lens

The paper towel looks real.... I'd say a PSA 10. The better the picture, the lower the grade ;)

He needs to retake the pictures. This time, put the card on a black surface. And the clearer the picture, the better. You will get quality opinions if you can take quality pictures.

I would put the card in a sleeve and a card saver. ;)

It’s likely going to max out with PSA at a 7 because of the top/bottom centering and the slight diamond cut. Any surface, edge, or corner blemishes will drop it from there.

    Overall it looks nice.

I am hoping that these are type 1 photos too!

  • The picture quality isn’t the greatest. With that said, I give it between a psa5 to psa7.5. All 4 corners have some kind of issue. The front gets a hit for being too high. The back takes a hit for pulling left too much. Just my opinion…

Yeah I gotta get him to take some better pictures. When I ask him, the newer pictures just end up worse than the old ones 😂

Even with blurry pictures it looks pretty nice. If that is a 5, it looks like a nice 5 that many would want. The corners dont look too soft. The color looks solid without major print issues. The back actually looks pretty sharp for a 44-year-old card. The top to bottom centering is off by a bit and that will impact the grade but with some cards it does not impact the overall presentation too much. For me this card would
look a lot worse with left to right centering problems.

I'd say if this was a common and there isn't anything missed in the unclear photos it could be an 8. But it's not. 😄 And its clearly seen as an unwritten rule that today grades on very valuable cards are stricter and if it can go one way or another it isn't going the better way on a Gretzky MJ or Henderson much at all, but probably even less likely for someone just opening a new account and submitting one card.

I think it should definitely be submitted to PSA for grading. And first it needs to get off the paper towels and protected and ready for submission. Need to get in a penny sleeve that has been cut on one side so it goes in smoothly with minimal friction to corners, then placed in a semi-rigid sleeve.

I'd say if its a 7.5 accept it. Anything less send it over to SGC for a graded card review with a minimum grade one grade higher than what you received. Its worth the time and effort for a $15 to $40 fee.
