    A common fake, there's many out there

    I'd say that it is probably distortion caused by the squish.

    Sure it would. Tighten, loosen, tighten, loosen. Repeat a few times with some shifting in the middle.

    This IS a vise job. Details beyond that are irrelevant.

    The first squeeze in the vice creates a "false die" or "transfer die" in a flat piece of metal (wheat cent) which is over the reverse.
    Then that false die is rotated and the second squeeze is done.
