That can be subjected to elemental analysis with the goals of
A: Possibly determining their place of origin, and
B: possibly linking them to other silver counterfeits of the era, such as (hypothetically, for example) the 1921 counterfeit halves.

Is a 1923 dime with a glued on D mint mark considered a counterfeit coin?
Or a real coin with a fake added mintmark?
Or a real coin with a fake added mintmark?
Not considered a counterfeit coin as it is still legal tender.
It is called an altered coin, something like making a 1944 cent look like a 1914 cent.
Still illegal to sell on ebay
I used to own both a 1923-D and a 1930-D counterfeit dime, sold both of them.

I wish I did. I find them highly interesting.
I tried to buy one once ("1923-D").
But I couldn't quite convince the owner to part with it.
Any chance the owner would be willing to have it tested for the record?
