How many 2024 Olympians can you name?

I think Clark was selected. Also Griner and Reese and maybe Taurasi.

Can't name any one in any other sport. Got to give the WNBA credit for the last several months of promotion.

Probably won't watch any BBall, mostly a track and field fan.

Well good to see LeBron and Steph and Scheffler and Rory making the cut.

That is special every 4 years.

St. Pierre, Noah Lyles are the two off the top of my head. Richardson…. watched a lot of the trials but not good with names.

I'm a little lost on with the Olympics...I just get into the Weight-Lifting events... :)

Caitlin didnt make the team for who knows what reason. Griner and Taurasi both made the team.

Reese didnt make the team because shes not very good. Shes under 40 percent shooting layups and a ton of her rebounds for her double doubles are just off her own missed shots

Guess I got fake news. Caitlin is an alt and Reese is a spectator.

It's a shame that Abby Steiner couldn't quite get there coming off an injury.

Yea. I really wouldnt call an alt an Olympian though. Griner and Taurasi both have injuries. Griner wouldnt make sense for Caitlin to replace and I think Taurasi stays on the roster even if she cant play since its going to be her last Olympics. Realistically the USA could send 5 teams to the Olympics in Womens Basketball and they would all finish in the top 5

Opening ceremony today. Not going to watch it. Never have.

Kind of glad to have the Games Begin as they say.

Will keep the TV warm until NFL and NIL kickoff.

    Worst opening ceremony ever. Disgusting.

    Terry Bradshaw was AMAZING!!

Olympics has to wait until after the Brewers game but I gotta know what I missed in the opening ceremony. This is gonna be good.

  • coolstanleycoolstanley Posts: 2,905 ✭✭✭✭✭

Then you have Lebron James acting like he's a proud American. Good lord.

I have no real desire to watch it anymore. I might flip it on if the womens soccer team is losing though

No one takes the high road anymore I’m guessing.

  • DocBenjaminDocBenjamin Posts: 1,461 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'll watch some this weekend until the 40 minutes of schmaltz each hour, becomes overwhelming.

World politics sucks and I have not watched the olympics in 50 years when it was interesting. Now it's just a joke!
Give me baseball in the USA and maybe a little pro football if I have nothing else to do.
Basketball sucks and so does soccer which is super boring watching them run up and down the field with hardly any scoring.
Never watched any track and field.

I turned on swimming now and so far nothing has triggered my delicate sensibilities. I don’t know what happened during the opening ceremony still but I hope anyone affected is getting the help they need. :)

Wonder which gets extinguished first, the Olympic Cauldron in a couple weeks, or this thread?

  • perkdogperkdog Posts: 30,722 ✭✭✭✭✭

Simone Biles and that is it

And nope, I won't watch any of it just because I'm not interested

    Not enough.

The Olympics is too important to be reduced to what is the current popular trends that simply is not related to Athletic competition. There is a special moment that transpires every four years that has been compromised by commercial nonsense. Can we please take a moment and embrace what the original intent was for Olympic competition?

Sadly the world is not what it once was and the expectations of a simple concept has changed over the years to reflect what was never intended.

Let the athletes have their moment without the commercial element that seems to bring out the worst in all of us.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

That is where the Winter Games have the edge. At least to the U.S. audience. Less divas and less tumult.

I thought it was a great opening ceremony, they really showed a lot of Paris, brought back a lot of memories from my visit there in the summer of 92'. It's sad that a lot of Ukrainian athletes didn't make it to Paris because they died from an invasion that would make Hitler proud. I'll tell you what's disgusting, some of the views on this forum, it's why I don't post over here anymore, the people on the forum that seem to support the restoration of the Soviet Union, the bigots on the forum that hate gay and trans people, the people on the forum that are too stupid and shallow to realize that the flag protests were a human rights issue and nothing more. I mean honest to God, if you don't like the way things are in the United States, then go the hell to Russia and live, I'm sure Putin will welcome you with open arms.

What exactly does certain elements of that opening ceremony have to do with sports? I'll tell ya - absolutely nothing.

Sorry to say my friend, but you are seeing things on this forum that aren't there. For example, I've never seen one single post here over the years about hate towards gay people.

The rest is political which i'm not going to comment on. Otherwise I may not get to 28,418 in my post count. 😉

DD has been way out of line since that boxing match when someone questioned if the guy won because he was from the Ukraine. He went off on a crazy rant then kind of like now. I think that one was deleted by the moderator.
For someone who is so against hate and intolerance DD sure spews plenty of both on this forum.

To me this entire forum is all about fun, and that's the way I enjoy it. The interesting discussions about coins and cards. Also rooting for teams and players which is an integral part of being a sports fan, which stimulates card collecting. As well as other topics covered throughout the forum. I've even posted in the stamp forum a few times over the years.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. I've never met a coin or card collector who I didn't like. That goes way back to early grade school. Anyone who has ever posted on CU, if I met them at a coin or card show, I'd be more than happy to buy them a drink after the show is over. 😊

DD - You've retired and unretired from this forum more times than Muhammad Ali used to do. 😆

But if this is your final curtain call, I wish ya the best, and good luck.

i'm all about the track relays

only way i'd miss them is if i received notification of another neanderthal contribution in this thread

Oh DD has more retirement speeches than Ali, Favre and Michael Jordan combined, it's not even close lol

DD, You used to be hilarious and one of my favorite posters but your act has gotten so old and tiresome, you go and support lunacy all you want but please make sure the door smacks you in the rear end on your way out.

USA leads the medal count with 12. 3 gold and a bunch of silver.

Kind of spoiled when I lived on the other side of Ontario and got the CBC channel which was probably the BBC feed. Few commercials and more sports and less kibbitzing.

  • stevekstevek Posts: 29,059 ✭✭✭✭✭

With many of the Russians barred from this Olympics, it's of course going to be easier for countries to accumulate medals.

  • DocBenjaminDocBenjamin Posts: 1,461 ✭✭✭✭✭

    The asterisk games.

Maybe they should schedule them between wars.

  • Basebal21Basebal21 Posts: 3,516 ✭✭✭✭✭

Theres Russians in the Olympics they just arent competing under the Russian flag just like when Russia was banned for their PED program. Doesnt matter that much anyways, the USA dominates the summer games

Watched a bit of fencing tonight. Probably be tiresome to train for that, 8 hours a day.
