I don’t know, my Guess from the way it looks is that it may be Australian though I could be Californian as Instead. It has a deeper orange color than my other nugget which from what I read means higher purity. When I go back to collage in the fall I will ask permission to go to the lab with the XRF to know for certain.

I do not have pictures, but I bought several back in 1989-1990.

This one is a 5.4 gram nugget from Australia. I call it "Land Shark".

Fitting name, I was thinking about what name my nuggets would be since you mentioned it. The little one looks like a hand and the big one looks like I dinosaur footprint.

interesting. Thank you for posting. Out of curiosity, what purity are nuggets? I'm not even sure how one would describe the purity of a nugget. If not pure gold, what other substances might be included? will a precious metal tester indicate purity? Other included substances?

Just asking, thanks in advance for responses.

From my understanding from the little research I have done and what the store owner told me, the purity ranges from 19 Karat to 23 karat of gold or 79%-98%. Alaskan are between 82-86% pure while Australian are 94-98%, and Californian nuggets are approx 90% pure. From my understanding as well, the more orange color, the more pure the gold content of the nugget. Usually the others metals are silver, copper or even platinum are what dilute the gold purity.

Wow, those are massive. I have panned for gold in Cali, but never found anything near that big.

Just Imagine being the lucky one who pulled something like that from the river. That would be awesome. I have watched prospecting & panning videos on YouTube and it looks like a time consuming yet fun activity.

Maybe, "Insane in the Membrane" for the rough one and "Rock of Goldbraltar" for the other.

a 4.08 ounce nugget with iron inclusions sold Sunday, 7/14 on GC for $8102 including BP. I was tempted, but unfortunately, didn't have $8K laying around the house.
