How does one do crossovers?

BarberianBarberian Posts: 3,544 ✭✭✭✭✭

Do you wrap up the old slab somehow? In a plastic bag? Is there a proper sized bag for holding slabs to be crossed over?

I have a coin in a PCI holder. Do I have to crack it out and submit it raw? Or can I send it in for PCGS to crack out and consider a raw submission?

I have ICG, NGC, ANACS, and PCI holders. Are just PCI holders problematic?

I sent three Morgan dollars to PCGS last year for crossing over -- two ANACS and one NGC. I left them in their holders when I sent them in for two reasons. One, so that if they didn't cross over at my minimum specified grades, they could be mailed back in their original holders. And two, if they did cross, PCGS would be more experienced in cracking them out than I would.

Just wrap the slab up well in bubble wrap before boxing it up. Hopefully you'll be getting a new PCGS slab anyway, but no sense in damaging your old one during shipment.

I'm going to be dropping these off at a show and I don't know the procedure at a show. Do I simply hand these slabs over to them with information on every slab? I'll just bring the slabs and figure it out there.

You should download and fill out this form ahead of time. All instructions are attached.

    https://www.pcgs.com/submissionguide

CROSSOVER: For a coin previously graded (currently encapsulated) by another grading service. PCGS will holder the coin only if it meets or exceeds your specific request notated in the “Minimum Grade” column on the front of the form. Grading fees will apply whether the coins cross or not. Coins that do cross will also be charged a Guarantee Premium* based on the value of the coin. Please specify one of the options below in the “Minimum Grade” column on the front of the form. If you leave this area blank, PCGS will assume the minimum grade is the grade currently on the holder.
    Minimum Grade Options:
CURRENT – Requests coin to cross at grade listed on holder.
ANY – Requests coin to cross at any numerical grade (01-70).
DETAILS – Requests coin to cross at any numerical grade or Genuine no-grade.
OTHER GRADE – If you would like to specify a different grade than listed on the holder, write your acceptable numerical grade (include suffix if applicable).
    Note the following limitations apply:
» You cannot specify a minimum details grade for existing genuine-holdered coins.
» Qualifying NGC First Strike, First Day of Issue or equivalent may be recognized
» Minimum grades are not accepted for regrade or reconsideration service types.

    • GUARANTEE PREMIUM: Equal to 1% of the value of the coin in its final grade. The value of the coin is determined by the PCGS Price Guide value for that grade or the Declared Value of the coin, if the Price Guide value is not available. The minimum amount for the Guarantee Premium is $10. PCGS reserves the right to make the final determination of the coin’s value.

Thanks to everyone who replied. The process went very smoothly. I mainly was concerned over whether coins had to be cracked out and if there were certain packaging requirements and procedures I had to follow. The only question PCGS had after drop-off was an ANACS label that had information on reverse die mintmark size, and whether that info needed to be transferred onto the new holder. The DM was a an R3, so no worries.

These submissions are going to be an adventure as there are some scarce coins in third-world holders purchased early on at low cost that have some issues.

My response is too late to help since you already did it, but I did my first crossover recently for an NGC coin I wanted in a PCGS holder. I brought the slabbed NGC coin to the Long Beach show in a baggie and handed it to the Lady at the PCGS table and she filled out the form for me, it was super easy that way. I also had raw coins I wanted to get slabbed and had pre-filled out the submission form, so she copied my member number and address off of that form onto a different form for the crossover. I crossed it over at any straight grade, but wanted it to remain in the NGC slab if they would have thought it was a details coin, so no way I would have cracked it out before submitting it.
